Brooklyn Nine-Nine Praised By Star For Personal Bisexuality Story

Brooklyn Nine-Nine character Rosa Diaz came out as bisexual in season 5 of the popular show.

For actress Stephanie Beatriz, it was art imitating real life.

Explaining how the character arc came around, she said: "I'm bisexual in real life, and I came out kind of publicly on Twitter.

"Around that time, [show creator] Dan Goor approached me and said 'we were thinking that it might be interesting for Rosa's storyline to explore her being bisexual, would you be comfortable exploring that?'

"And I was like 'Yes! Absolutely yes!'

"Dan invited me into the writers' room to talk with the writers and discuss what I felt would be important things to have in the story so it felt real."

Goor added on E4's Goodbye Brooklyn Nine-Nine special why Rosa's coming out didn't go entirely smoothly outside of her Nine-Nine family.

"We also didn't want to wrap things up too neatly with a bow," he said.

"That's why at the end she makes some progress with her dad, but not really any progress with her mum. One of the best lines, I think of the whole show, is the line Captain Holt says to her after she comes out."

The line in question is when Andre Braugher's Captain Holt says to her: "Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a much better and interesting place, so thank you."

Encanto star Beatriz added: "I think that's the thing that Brooklyn does so well.

"It's that it shares these stories about real stuff that people are going through, and never loses its sense of comedy."

Last night (June 8), the hour-long special aired before the final episode in the UK, and also featured contributions from cast members including Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio and Craig Robinson.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 and Goodbye Brooklyn Nine-Nine are available to watch on E4 and All 4 in the UK.
