Formula:

β = ΔB / ΔpH Where, β = Buffer Capacity ΔB = Amount of Acid/Base ΔpH = Difference between initial and final value of pH

Example:

A buffer solution has an amount of acid with 0.02 mol, initial pH & final pH is 4.75 & 5.20. find β?

Solution:

β = ΔB/ΔpH = 0.02 / (5.20-4.75) = 0.02 / 0.45 = 0.044 mol

The Buffer capacity (β) calculation is done by dividing the moles of an acid or base necessary to change 1 unit of pH of a solution by the pH change and the volume of buffer in liters.
