Bump

bUMPING/PASSING

Passing is the foundation of volleyball as it is how you will deliver an effective attack and it is one of the most important skills of volleyball. The bump is the method of passing that is used when the ball is below the head and is typically the first touch of the three contacts. When the ball is above the head, most players will pass with a set. When it comes to passing or bumping the ball, The form and positioning of your body is a very important factor.
Moving to the Ball
  1. Get in position. Legs should be shoulder-width apart, bend your knees and slightly lean forward, putting your weight on your toes. Hold your arms loosely in front of you and to your sides and do not connect your hands yet.
  2. Once the ball is served, make sure you get both feet behind the ball and wait for the ball to come to you. Make sure your hands are still free as you are moving around.
  3. Keep your knees bent and use a shuffle or side step to move from side to side.
  4. Once you're in the right spot, make sure your hips are facing the direction in which you want to pass your ball.

  1. Bring your hands together and place one hand on top of the other. Gather your two thumbs together (as shown in the image on the left).
  2. Another option is to make a fist with one hand and wrap the other hand around it (as shown in the image on the right).

3. With your arms locked together and hands out, gather your elbows inward as much as you can without changing your hand position. This will form the platform using your wrists and forearms. 4. Maintain this platform at all times and do not contact the ball on your wrists but rather on this flat surface. This will help avoid a lot of injuries and bruises that many beginners tend to form.
Passing Motion
  • Make sure your hips are still facing your target (direction you want to pass your ball to)
  • Contact the ball around your waist and as you are about to contact it, straighten your legs so that your arms are moving up to meet the ball
  • Move your arms forward and slightly up but make sure not to swing your arms (much of the movement should be from your legs)
