Cantharone (Cantharidin) is often referred to as “beetle juice” or “bug juice” is a blistering agent that is extracted from the blister beetle. It is used to treat common warts (verruca plantaris, or plantar wart) and a skin problem called molluscum contagiosum (MC). This treatment is sometimes used if salicylic acid or freezing a wart with liquid nitrogen has not successfully eliminated it. The doctor applies the liquid solution directly on your wart and covers it with a bandage. The cantharidin causes the skin under the wart to blister, lifting the wart off the skin. When the blister dries up, the wart comes off with the blistered skin. Cantharidin is often cited in the dermatology and pediatric literature as a safe & valuable treatment option for warts, molluscum contagiosum, and callus removal. In a study (Cantharidin Revisited A Blistering Defense of an Ancient Medicine – October 2001), Lisa Moed, BA, found that "Cantharidin in a flexible collodion medium has long been considered a viable option for the treatment of warts and molluscum."
