What is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestin—a man-made hormone similar to progesterone.

It is used to treat heavy or painful periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), endometriosis, and to delay your period for special occasions and holidays.

How does Norethisterone work?

During the menstrual cycle, the level of progesterone hormone in the body changes, affecting the lining of the uterus. When progesterone levels are high, the lining of the uterus is thick, allowing an egg to implant and prepare for fertilisation. If the egg is not fertilised, the progesterone level falls again, and the lining of the uterus and the egg cell is shed during a menstrual period (bleeding).

Norethisterone keeps the levels of progesterone high, tricking the body into thinking it is pregnant. As a result, the uterine lining is not shed, so a regular period bleed does not occur.

It can be safely prescribed to women between 18 and 54. Suppose you are outside this limit or are taking a combined contraceptive pill. In that case, we suggest contacting your doctor as there may be alternatives better suited for you to delay your period.

Norethisterone is not a form of contraception and will not protect you against unwanted pregnancy. You should use another form of contraception, such as condoms, while taking Norethisterone.

How do I take Norethisterone?

You should start taking Norethisterone 3 days before your period is due to start for maximum effectiveness.

The usual dosage is one pill three times a day.

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.

Norethisterone tablets can be taken with or without food.

Your normal period should resume 2-3 days after taking the last tablet. If your period does not start within this time frame, please don't hesitate to contact our clinicians or your regular GP for further advice and assistance.

If you forget to take Norethisterone at the scheduled time, take it as soon as you remember. Continue to take Norethisterone at the usual time.

If you take more Norethisterone tablets than you should, speak to your doctor straight away.

Norethisterone side effects and cautions

Who should not take Norethisterone?

Norethisterone should not be taken if you:

are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or trying to conceive
are breastfeeding
have had previous blood circulation problems, such as a blood clot in any part of the body
have unexplained and chronic chest pain, shortness of breath or cough
have undiagnosed genital bleeding
have untreated endometrial hyperplasia
have liver or kidney dysfunction
have Diabetes

Allergies

Do not take Norethisterone if you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Norethisterone, such as lactose, maize starch, or magnesium stearate.

If you experience the signs of an allergic reaction after taking Norethisterone, stop taking the tablets and seek immediate medical attention by going straight to your nearest hospital's casualty department. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining tablets with you so that the doctors treating you know exactly what you have taken.

Signs of an allergic reaction include:

Dry, red, and cracked skin
Itchy, red, watery eyes
Raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
Swelling of the lips, tongue, eyes or face
