Pay Fare by Bus Pass
CATA offers a variety of multiple ride and unlimited ride passes, including discount passes for students, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and Medicare cardholders. Buy a pass online.
CATA’s farebox features a magnetic card reader and printer. To pay your fare, simply swipe or dunk your fixed-route pass.
How to purchase passes:
- Buy online through secure CATA website.
- At the CATA Transportation Center (downtown Lansing).
- At the CATA Administrative Office (in south Lansing).
- At various locations throughout the area. View list of pass vendor locations.
CATA offers a variety of bus pass options for your convenience, and prices are listed in the CATA online store. All passes are subject to service terms and are revocable by CATA. They are non-transferable and non-refundable. CATA is not responsible for lost or stolen passes.
Pay Fare by Cash
To pay your fare, place your U.S. coins or bill in the farebox when you board. Have your money in hand (U.S. coins only) and identification card ready (drivers are instructed to ask to see ID cards for discounted cash fares) to show the bus operator when you board. Fareboxes accept $1, $5, and $10 bills, as well as all U.S. coins lower than 25¢.
While drivers cannot make change, if you use cash and pay more than your fare, the farebox can issue a CATACash Card to use towards payment on future fixed-route trips. Fareboxes issue a CATACash Card for the difference between what you owe and what you deposit in the farebox when you pay too much. CATACash Cards are only issued and accepted on CATA fixed-route buses. The cards cannot be redeemed for cash.
Pay Spec-Tran
As an alternative to cash, CATA sells tokens that are good for a one-way ride on any Spec-Tran vehicle.
