bandmfox B Hello, we are in the process of looking for a used Odyssey (2011 - 2014) and I can't seem to find information on any year models to avoid (if at all). We've done our homework and like the current model out there, and it doesn't seem anything significant has changed from year to year. Are there any years where manufacturing was shotty? Do the Odysseys still run great at higher mileage? I've found a couple great deals on 2011 EX-Ls, one has 96,000 miles and is one owner. We can't decide if we're ok with an older model to save some cash, or if we should just fork over a little more $$ to get something down in the 35-50k range. We're looking to have the car for 3-5 years. Any direction or advice you can give? #1 · Nov 19, 2015 Hello, we are in the process of looking for a used Odyssey (2011 - 2014) and I can't seem to find information on any year models to avoid (if at all). Mine had no end of issues. Couldn't wait to get rid of it. Good luck. #3 · Nov 19, 2015 According to Consumer Reports, the 2011 has worse than average problems with electrical, brakes, and body. All improved to average or better in 2012 except brakes, which improved to much better than average in 2014. 2011 was the first year of the Generation 4 redesign. First year models always have a few glitches. Hope that helps with your search. Dave #4 · Nov 20, 2015 +1 for ruling out 2011. I make it a practice not to buy first year after major model rework. #5 · Nov 21, 2015 I have the '11, no major issues so far except the power steering noise. Cross finger I'm keeping mine for a long year. #6 · Nov 21, 2015 I have '11 too. no problem whatsoever except brakes. #7 · Nov 21, 2015 I just picked up a 2011, seems mechanically sound. Had the Battery run low and switched it out and got the VSA light. Took to dealer and cleared the code. For some ODD reason, i feel the trans feels funny, like it lags or whines. I bought with 79k and extended warranty. Only had since OCT but so far, pretty happy with it. Also came from a 2000 so it WAS a big upgrade for our family. #8 · Nov 21, 2015 I have friends who have all years of the Odyssey in the 2011-2015. There are many friends where their 2011 was problem free, but many where their 2011 had tons of issues. After that, the issues are very minor and there are very minimal problems, especially the 2014. Honda is not exactly the best in its first model year models -it's all about luck. My family has bought 1st year model years of Lexus and they have always been problem-free -perhaps the only brand. #9 · Nov 22, 2015 True. My 2011 has been for the most part trouble free. I do regular maintenance items and that is about it. I can say the 2011 is much better than my earlier 2008 Odyssey. #10 · Nov 22, 2015 If I was shopping now for a 2011or later, I'd definitely buy a 12 or 13, unless they were just giving away the 2011. The quality of the 12 or later had to be much greater than the 2011, especially the ones built early in the model year. I know this from experience. There could be a reason you're seeing great deals on 2011s. But whatever you do, just make sure all the TSBs and recalls were handled, and regular service done, and should may be okay. And, the prior owner may have dealt with all of the quality issues for you. Good luck. #11 · Nov 23, 2015 Don't see how the newer ones are much better, my 2011 seems to have the same issues the 2012 and newer models have - warped rotors, transmission shudder, front strut noise, and noisy (whiny) power steering pump. All fixed with TSB's, except I replaced the rotors myself. Other than that, no real issues. My last 4 car/truck purchases have all been new/redesigned model years and I haven't had any major issues. I would be worried more about the mileage and overall condition of the van instead of what year it was, and depending on price of course. If the used van is at a Honda dealer, ask them to look up the service/warranty repair history of it based on the VIN number. #12 · Nov 24, 2015 Just keep in my that individual anecdotal reports of '11's without issues doesn't negate the statistical probability that an '11 will be more problematic than a '12 or '13. +1 for checking the warranty repair history when possible. Seeing a recurring problem that they haven't been able to fix may save you from chasing the same ghost. #13 · Nov 24, 2015 ^that's true, but I don't recall posts about people having major issues with their 2011 after it came out. But the 4 issues I listed seem to pop up on the forum all the time and they occur on most 4th gen years, not just the 2011... #14 · Nov 26, 2015 2014 has a major advantage in the safety department. First year with ace passenger compartment safety cage. Check out iihs small overlap collision test results. Notice they never went back to put the 2013 and previous years to the test. Honda and Toyota were the two manufacturers who attempted to address prior to subjecting their vans to the new test. Insert Quotes Post Reply
