How to Calculate Calorie Density

Calorie Density, sometimes called energy density, is the ratio of a food’s energy value in calories relative to its weight or volume. Eating foods with a low caloric density can help with weight loss since they tend to make you more full with a larger portion but with lower calorie content.

You can calculate the caloric density of food using a simple formula.

Calorie Density Formula

Caloric Density = Calories per Serving / Serving Size

Thus, calorie density is equal to the calories per serving divided by the serving size, usually in grams.

So, to calculate calorie density, find the serving size in grams and calories per serving for the food item. Then, divide the calories per serving by the serving size to get the density.

If you’re measuring calorie density as part of a weight loss program, consider incorporating an active lifestyle into your program as well. Use our steps to miles calculator to see just how far you’re walking with those extra steps!
