I love the name Cal. I looked around to see what names have a nickname of Cal. I remember when Calvin Johnson played for the Lions and I always liked him. I thought about other Calvins I knew by acquaintance and they were all nice people. Then I started using and writing the name Calvin and loved it!

My husband picked this name even before we were engaged. We hesitated to use it because it means “bald.” When my 7th baby was born, we had a big surprise. It was a boy when we had been sure it was a girl. He went unnamed for several days until we went back to my husband’s original choice of Calvin. He was very bald as a baby so hopefully he has the “bald” part of his life behind him. It is a strong and dignified name.

We picked Calvin because we felt it is a strong, masculine, classic name without being over used. Our daughters all have classic names, so we didn’t want to stray from that. We also wanted it to be some what biblical and we like that it is after the theologian John Calvin. One of my husband’s favorite football players is Calvin Johnson, and we both liked Calvin and Hobbs as children.

Believe it or not I did not pick his name, his dad did. If you ever heard of the cartoon or seen the newspaper cartoon of “Calvin and Hobbes“. That’s what came to mind when he named him. It isn’t a very common name now a days and it just stuck. As soon as I seen his face I knew we had to keep the name.

We wanted a traditional or old fashioned name that still felt unique and wasn’t too popular. We also wanted to make sure it sounded great with my husbands family middle name, Lewis. We chose the name by looking at lots of baby name lists sorted by popularity and both instantly loved it.

My son was named Calvin after an old comic in the Sunday newspaper. Some may not recall Calvin and Hobs. In the comic Calvin was a young boy who carried around a stuffed tiger named Hobs. To the little boy Hobs was real. They went on many imaginary adventures and got into a lot of trouble with his mom.

We wanted a name that was not as common but still easy to say and spell. A respectable name that would last up into his adulthood. We also liked the idea of his nickname being “Cal.” And no, it’s not specifically based on Calvin & Hobbes. I also kept picking other names that sounded like mine & my brother Kevin’s, haha.

There’s no family tie to this name for our son, but we both just liked the sound of it with our last name, and his grandfather’s name as a middle name. We like that it’s an easily recognizable name without it being very common at all these days.

We wanted something biblical or of an esteemed theologian. Or something hipster. It was between Everett and Calvin (after John Calvin). We had decided on Everett before my son was born, but when we saw him, we knew he was Calvin. His middle name is my dads first name, James. Plus biblical.

We chose the name “Calvin” after John Calvin, a pastor and theologian from the 16th century who was a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation.
