While on vacation at Granite Falls, Sims can stay at cabins or go Camping. There are no Skills directly applied with camping, but there are special buff moodlets that may let your Sims enjoy their time on vacation even more.

Camping Gear

You cannot access Build Mode while on vacation, but don't worry if you don't have any camping supplies. A ranger station is on the campground lot a short distance from the main area. Speak to the ranger there and you can purchase some goods to keep you from sleeping in the grass.

There are a few buffs associated with the gear, especially if your Sim has the Survivalist or Loves Outdoors Trait. There are several types of tents you can buy depending on much you want your Sim to be roughing it. Note that if you buy a cabin tent, you don't need a cot as your Sim will happily sleep on the ground.

There are additional items to buy here including books and fire pits. One item of special note is the Growfruit, which serves as a glowing, fast-growing item that works well as a fertilizer for gardening. It won't help you on your vacation unless you're desperate for food, but you may want to bring a few home with you if your Sim enjoys gardening.

Any supplies you buy will be placed in your active Sim's inventory, and from there they can be dragged into the world. That be dragged around the world as well if you need to reposition them. If you have objects on the ground (such as a set-up tent) when you go home, those objects will be moved to your household inventory when you arrive back at your house.

Note that if you have the Cats and Dogs Expansion Pack installed, none of the camping spots nor cabins come with any pet food bowls. However, the ranger station sells cheap food dishes and toys.

Camping vs. Cabins

There is no serious gameplay difference between camping and cabins, so it comes down to comfort levels and Traits. Sims who are lazier or perhaps lack the love the outdoors will be more interested in cabins, especially Loners who want to avoid people. Sims who love the outdoors however will spend their vacations in very happy moods. You are not scored however; vacations are not social events. As such it ultimately does not matter where you go.

That said, camping requires one less loading screen if you wish to explore. Cabins load on smaller lots that have various accoutrements to enjoy but the campground is much bigger and features plenty of opportunities for exploration, hiking, and Herbalism. If you play on a weaker computer and loading screens are an issue, camping out might save you a little time.
