Can baby oil be used on my child’s skin? share this
Medically reviewed by Dr Simon Carvell 19th Jan 2023
You’ve probably heard of baby oil, as it’s a very popular product, but you may also wonder what you actually use it for. And – if you’ve just had a baby – you probably want to know if it’s a good idea to put it on your own child’s skin.
To fill you in on the subject of baby oil, we’ve teamed up with the skincare experts at JOHNSON’S® to answer some of the most common questions about this versatile product and how to use it.
What is baby oil and is it good for my little one?
Baby oil is a product designed to moisturise and protect skin from dryness when it's at its most delicate - in the early months of life - because baby skin loses moisture up to 2x faster than adults.
So, it’s great for your baby!
By using baby oil, you are keeping your little one’s delicate skin soft, moisturised and protected from dryness.
How should I use baby oil?
Using baby oil is an excellent way to moisturise your little one’s skin. The best way to use it is straight after a bath, which will lock in all the moisture and leave your baby’s skin soft and supple.
You can also use baby oil in the process of a baby massage. Many parents practice baby massage as it is a great way to help you bond with your little one. It is also good for the skin and has a range of other health benefits. For example, baby massage can help to stimulate blood circulation, and improve digestion – which can help prevent or ease wind, colic and constipation.
If you want to try baby massage, a good way to introduce it into your routine is by choosing a time when your little one is happy and alert - and is not hungry or just been fed.
Firstly, pop your baby on a towel on the ground, so there is no risk of them falling. Then, make sure your hands are clean and warm before applying some baby oil and then massaging your little one. Start with gentle stroking movements to get your baby used to the sensation and continue for about five minutes.
That’s enough time for most babies to start with, but as your little one gets used to massage you can try it for longer and introduce new movements.
Is baby oil just for babies?
No! Baby oil is great for the whole family and can be used to moisturise and protect skin at any age – from baby to adult - It can even be used as a make-up remover!
Where can I buy Baby Oil?
You can buy baby oil from your local supermarket, normally down the baby aisle or shop online!
