The game knows I hate dealing with this. Nearly half the time I go to clear out my tree farm, there's one of those giant trees in it. They take up so much space that the other saplings I planted can't grow, and it takes forever to get rid of all the leaves. Is there any way to prevent huge trees like this from happening? Quote from gilbbbr »Prune them, like real life. Remember that? I'm not sure if them grow back, but then that's a chance to make it look better.
... I don't want trees so they can be pretty. I want trees so I can get wood. You tend to run out of wood in a hurry when you're building bridges between floating islands. And I don't want to spend a year and a half climbing a gigantic tree in order to clear it out.
Quote from HappyHitman »Maybe take water away? Like keep some there just not loads. I don't know why they grow different sizes.
There's no water anywhere near them. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

It's said trees react to their surroundings. Maybe if they were planted in 3x3 holes two or three blocks deep they wouldn't come out big? I'm going to go and try this now, because I'm curious. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack "flatter" texture pack

I have had saplings never grow bigger than the initial thing that appears when you plant the sapling, while others have come out as 2x2x16 monstrosities. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack The Cool Side of the Pillow

That would make his house lower and the trees would still grow.
Would they grow? Or would they simply reach the roof and stop, thereby allowing you to remove the roof and having a shorter tree? AFAIK, cutting the top off a tree doesn't allow it to grow higher, so having something physically blocking the tree from growing would probably stop it. I've been playing around with tree growth underground today... If there's enough room for the tree to initially grow/spawn, it will do so. But if it is immediately thwarted by walls, it will stop growing. Sometimes it gets buggy since the growth is basically stored like kinetic energy (if you remove the retaining walls, the tree will expand out quite quickly). But if you set a mold/guideline for them to grow into, they won't exceed a certain size. Worth a try. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack Wondercraft SMP! wondercraft.ca! All are welcome. So, I tried four blocks with a hole in the middle to shorten a tree, and it failed spectacularly. So it looks like you can build some scaffolding, (non-dirt to encourage deterioration when it's harvest time,) and the trees will happily grow around it and you'll have an easy time getting up to height to clear them out. Why the hell would you put a hole in it? It will just grow through the hole -.- Surround it with dirt, put torches inside, plant tree, wait... Remove dirt. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack The Cool Side of the Pillow

Just pillar dirt under yourself and then dig it down when you're done harvesting the wood. No pain, no wood. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

there is always the chop the trunk and burn method, if you have your tree farm set up so all that trees grow in at around the same time. Edit: nvm, i forgot notch broke that method with ever burning logs. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

One thing I was curious about with the slash-and-burn method is: do you still get saplings after the branches burn off? Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Best method would seem to be to just build a walkway out of cobblestone 5 or 6 blocks above the level of the tree, and use a stone sword to help with the pruning. For instance: :Leaves: = sapling :--+: = torch :cobblestone: = walkway 5 blocks above :Green: = grass, dirt, ect. :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :--+: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :--+: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Green: :--+: :Leaves: :--+: :Green: :cobblestone: :Green: :--+: :Leaves: :--+: :Green: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :--+: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :--+: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :Green: :Green: :Green: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: With this, you should be able to reach every block that is created by the tree unless it grows extremely high. If you have the trees spaced more spaced apart, you can just use a wider walkway. The stone sword will make quick work of the leaves, but may not completely last, but if you start from the top and work down, it shouldn't be a problem. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

I actually have this for my tree farm with a 4 block high general roof and a 1x1x1 block hole cut direct above the sapling for 5 block height, they never get bigger than 5x5x4 Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Tree growth is random, and is not dependent on blocks above, around, or in the way of the tree. Nor is it dependent on light and water. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack Sincerely, DinoFight

Been using the scaffold method I posted above for awhile now. Have not yet had any large trees I could not fully harvest. The large trees often give you twice the number of logs that a small tree gets you in the same amount of grow time... So isn't such a bad deal afterall. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack
