The simple answer is, yes! However, frothing almond milk takes a bit of finesse! In this article, I will explain what type of almond milk froths the best, and how to achieve the perfect foamy froth for all your favorite coffee drinks!

Essentials to Perfectly Frothed Milk
Before you even attempt to froth your milk, you need to be sure that you have the type of milk that will give you that smooth foamy froth for your latte art, lattes, and cappuccino needs. It’s pretty simple to froth regular milk. Its high-fat content and lactose are perfect for whipping into a frothy dream.
However, non-dairy milk is not so easy! There are so many different varieties out there, that even when you narrow it down to almond milk, you’ll find a wide array of choices in the grocery aisle. While it’s amazing that there are so many choices, the challenge becomes if you pick the wrong one with the purpose of creating delicious lattes, you could end up very disappointed.
Some almond milk has too much water, and won’t foam at all, while others leave you with a few meager bubbles.
But creating the perfect light, fluffy, foam with almond milk IS POSSIBLE! You just need to be sure that you choose the best type of almond milk, and follow these simple steps to get that amazing microfoam that melts in your coffee like a dream and has a subtle creamy taste! Protein vs. Fat:
Milk is made up of three main components, protein, fat, and carbohydrates. In order to create a nice froth the protein to fat ratio is important. You want both high protein content, and high-fat content. The higher the protein and fat, the easier the milk will be to foam. A low-fat or non-fat almond milk will not foam well. Look for barista blend almond milk for best results.
High Quality Milk:
Cheap almond milk barely uses any almonds at all and is mostly made of water. As a result, it is low in calories, and also low in fat. These types of milk will not froth well at all. Instead, look for fresh high-quality almond milk that uses quality almonds, and has a higher fat content.
Temperature:
Similar to frothing dairy milk, frothing almond milk can also easily burn or scorch. If your almond milk gets too hot too fast, it will not create a smooth froth. If you warm your almond milk over the stove, you run the risk of heating it too quickly, bringing it to a boil, and scorching the milk.
It is best to use a milk steamer. However, you can warm the milk over the stove, but you must be very careful not to bring it to a boil. You can also warm the milk in the microwave, but again, you need to be careful not to bring it to a boil.
If the milk is too hot, it will not have that luxurious texture. The milk should be at a temperature of about 150 F. If you choose to use the stovetop method, I suggest inserting a thermometer so that you can remove the milk from the heat immediately once it reaches the desired temperature.
How to Froth Almond Milk

When it comes to frothing there are many options available to you! That way, you can choose what method works best for you depending on the tools and equipment you have at home. These methods use very simple and basic tools, that every kitchen has on hand, to the more sophisticated milk frothing equipment.
Saucepan and Whisk:
Let’s start with a simple method that requires three simple kitchen tools: a small saucepan, a thermometer, and a whisk. While this is the simplest way to froth milk, it is not the best, as the whisk is not the best tool to add air into the milk to create a smooth and silky foam.
- Add your high-quality, high-fat almond milk to a small saucepan. Place a thermometer in the pot.
- Over medium heat, slowly warm the milk. When the milk reaches a temperature of 150 F, remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Quickly whisk the milk, adding air and bubbles until you reach your desired consistency. This will take about two minutes. Keep whisking vigorously!
Using A Steaming Wand:
If you have an espresso machine, with a steam wand, this is an excellent method to use. In fact, this is the method used by baristas in coffee shops. It works by slowly adding steam to the milk that creates air in the milk that gives rise to the foam. For this method, you’ll need an espresso machine with a steaming wand, and a stainless steel pitcher.
Using a steam wand takes a bit of finesse. Here’s how it works…
- Add your cold almond milk to a stainless steel pitcher.
- Place the steam wand into the pitcher, holding the pitcher at an angle.
- Keep the wand just below the top of the almond milk, don’t place it all the way to the bottom of the pitcher. Slowly turn the dial of the steamer to introduce the steam.
- Keep the wand towards the edge of the pitcher, just below the surface of the milk.
- Carefully move the pitcher in a circular motion, and then up and down to incorporate more air into the milk.
- Once the bubbles in the milk become smaller, and the milk doubles in size, you are ready to stop the steam, remove the wand from the pitcher, and enjoy your frothed milk.
Using a Handheld Frother:
A handheld frother is perfect for those that don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand but still want to create lattes at home. This is one of the easiest methods to use, and one that I highly recommend you start with. Here’s how it works…
- Add your cold almond milk to a large mug, bowl, jar, or a small pitcher.
- Place the frother into the milk, just below the surface. Turn it on, and froth the milk for about 30 seconds. Then move the frother around in a circular motion at the top of the milk, and then up and down to add more air and bubbles.
Using an Electric Frother:
Using an electric frother is by far my favorite way to froth milk! Why? There’s absolutely no hands-on time. Pour the milk into the frother, press the button, and wait while the machine does it all! This is the method I use every morning. Here’s how it works…
- Plug the frother into an electric outlet.
- Pour your cold almond milk into the stainless container. Only pour the minimum or maximum level. Don’t pour less or more. Secure the lid.
- Press the ON button, and that’s it! The machine will stop when the milk is ready.
Expert Tips for Frothing Almond Milk
Use Fresh Milk: As mentioned above, it’s best to use fresh almond milk. I prefer the ones in the refrigerated section over the ones that come in boxes. These are fresher and haven’t been sitting on a shelf for eons. Use your almond milk several days before expiration. This will yield the best end result.
Use Cold Milk: Another reason to opt for the type of milk that is refrigerated. You want your almond milk cold to start! If you break out a new box of milk that hasn’t been refrigerated you run the risk of it not creating as many air and bubbles.
Use a Small Container: This is most important if you are using a steam wand or handheld frother. Using a small container allows the milk to froth more evenly, achieving smaller bubbles rather than large bubbles.

How do you heat almond milk?The best way to heat almond milk is to do so slowly, and not to overheat it or bring it up to a boil. You can warm the milk in a saucepan over medium heat, but keep your eye on it the whole time, or use a thermometer to make sure it doesn’t burn or scorch. You can also warm it in the microwave in 30-second increments to slowly warm it to your desired temperature. Another option is us the double boiler method to keep the almond milk from direct heat, and instead use the steam from the double boiler to gently heat.
Can you froth flavored almond milk?Yes! You can most definitely froth-flavored almond milk such as vanilla. The key is to make sure that it has a high-fat content, and isn’t watery.
What type of non-dairy milk is best for frothing?Soy milk with a high-fat content froths nicely. As well as coconut milk and oat milk. Coconut milk naturally is high in fat and protein, making it ideal. Oat milk has a similar texture to regular dairy milk and will create a nice foam easily.
What type of almond milk froths the best?I don’t recommend any specific brand of almond milk, instead, look for high-quality milk that uses a high ratio of almonds, and a lower ratio of water. Cheaper versions use more water. Take a look at the fat content of the milk. A higher fat content will yield a better foam. Also, keep the milk cold before using it. The best type will be the ones that are made specifically for coffee drinks.
Why does almond milk curdle and separate when I add it to coffee?Almond milk curdles very easily. Especially if you add cold milk to hot coffee. The difference in temperature causes the milk to curdle. I find that when I steam and froth my almond milk, it doesn’t curdle in the same way because the almond milk has already been heated. Even if your milk curdles when you add it to your coffee, it’s still safe to drink.

Saucepan and Whisk Method
- Add your high-quality, high-fat almond milk to a small saucepan. Place a thermometer in the pot.
- Over medium heat, slowly warm the milk. When the milk reaches a temperature of 150 F, remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Quickly whisk the milk, adding air and bubbles until you reach your desired consistency. This will take about two mintes. Keep whisking vigorously! Alternatively, you can transfer the warmed milk to a blender. Turn onto medium speed and blend for 1-2 minutes or until milk forms small bubbles.
Handheld Frothing Wand Method
- Add your cold almond milk to a large mug, bowl, jar, or a small pitcher.
- Place the frother into the milk, just below the surface. Turn it on, and froth the milk for about 30 seconds.
- Then move the frother around in a circular motion at the top of the milk, and then up and down to add more air and bubbles.
Electric Milk Frother
- Plug the frother into an electric outlet. Pour your cold almond milk into the stainless container.
- Only pour the minimum or maximum level. Don't pour less or more.
