Puffer jackets made with down are probably one of the most intimidating items to wash. These jackets are normally very expensive, so one mistake would be a total catastrophe! Can you put puffer jackets in the washing machine, or do you have to hand wash it? TikToker @michelletiang and her teenage son reveal exactly how to wash your puffer jacket.

Can you put puffer jackets in the washing machine?

In a video with more than 561,000 likes, a TikTok user and her teenage son have explained the secret to washing your puffer jacket.

Technically speaking, how you should wash your jacket depends on the instructions on the care label.

However, most down puffer jackets can be washed in the machine under specific conditions.

According to @michelletiang and her son you cannot dry clean puffer jackets.

She explained: “My teen son told me that you cannot dry clean puffer jackets and he showed me how to clean it.

“Zip up everything and we took out the hood so that it could be washed as well and then flip it inside out.

“He said to use this (Grangers Wash and Repel Down 2 in 1, £10.50, Grangers.co.uk) and tennis balls.”

First, use two capfuls or 100ml of your regular washing detergent to wash your puffer jacket in the washing machine.

Make sure you wash it with cold water on a gentle cycle in the washing machine as hot water will shrink the jacket.

As an extra precaution, you could always place the jacket inside a mesh laundry bag when you wash it to protect it from being ripped by the machine.

When the cycle is done, put it into the dryer along with the tennis balls - Michelle uses three.

Set your dryer to the delicate setting on low heat and keep going until it is dry.

The TikToker warned that this process may take all day and night.

The teenage son of the TikTok blogger made an appearance in the video, explaining: “you have to keep taking it out and making sure it doesn’t get stuck in a segment.

“It wraps around the jacket and the stitch lines are here horizontally, so you have to make sure it travels around the whole circle.”

The mum added: “Don’t be concerned if it looks like wet patches, just keep going and then it will look perfectly puffy again.”
