Cancel Spectrum Internet: The Easy Way To Do It

I had been facing quite a few issues with my Spectrum connection lately.

I spent a lot of time looking around the internet and contacting Spectrum to get my issues fixed.

I spent more time fixing it than actually using the connection, so I decided to cut my losses and run.

I contacted Spectrum to cancel my connection; they were extremely reluctant to cancel my internet.

I went online to know what I should be telling the cancellation team.

Armed with that knowledge and a lot of negotiation, I finally managed to cancel it.

I documented everything I found and made this guide so that you, too, can cancel your Spectrum connection as soon as possible.

I will also discuss what you can expect and what you need to consider while on the call with customer service to cancel your connection.

To cancel your Spectrum internet connection, contact them directly. If they are reluctant to disconnect, ask for their retention department. Finally, return all of Spectrum’s equipment.

Moving Spectrum Service

If you want to cancel Spectrum because you are moving, you don’t need to cancel.

Check if Spectrum provides services to the area you are moving to with Spectrum’s Moving tool.

It’s easier to transfer your account and keep all your billing preferences and plans than cancel and set up a new account.

Spectrum will try to do their best because customer retention is always preferred over losing a customer.

Pausing Spectrum Service

Pausing your Spectrum service is a good choice if you temporarily stay at your current place or use the residence seasonally.

Of course, Spectrum will still charge you even if you pause the connection, but the charges will be lower than it was when it was active.

Spectrum TV Choice and Spectrum TV Stream subscriptions will still be full price.

Contact Spectrum to pause your connection.

You can see how much Spectrum will charge you after pausing at their Seasonal Status support page.

Check for Unpaid Balances

If you still need to cancel your Spectrum internet, you must first check if all dues are cleared.

Spectrum does not allow you to cancel if you have pending payments in your account.

You will also have to pay for the rest of the billing period as well.

This means that if you cancel on the first few days of a month, you still would have to pay for the whole month.

To check your Spectrum internet dues,

  1. Log in to your Spectrum account.
  2. Open the Billing tab.
  3. Download the most recent bill.

Select a Cancellation Date Before Next Payment Due Date

As I’ve mentioned before, you must pay the entire month’s bill if you time your cancellation date incorrectly.

Cancel before the payment due date of the next month so you can avoid being charged for the month you didn’t even use.

Do not try to cancel it on the day payment is due.

They will charge you for the whole of next month.

Instead, contact them and let them know the exact date you want services to stop.

Give them a date before the payment due date.

Call Spectrum Support and Ask for a Representative

Next is actually calling up Spectrum.

Get hold of them with their customer service line at (855) 707-7328.

Remember, the voice on the other side of the line is also a human.

Customer service representatives handle loads of calls a day, and giving them that consideration and being respectful to them will help you a lot.

Let them know that you want to cancel your Spectrum internet connection.

Speak to Retention

If they are reluctant to let you cancel and not budge, there’s something else you can try.

Ask them politely to refer you to the Retention department.

It is the job of the Retention department in every company to retain their customers by whatever means possible.

They are also more trained than the average representative, so it would be easier to negotiate with them.

Give Your Reasons

Put all of your cards on the table and be honest.

Remember to be considerate of the person on the line.

Be as respectful as possible but remember what you were here for.

Stay Firm and Friendly

Be firm and friendly in asking that you need to cancel your subscription for a good reason.

They will offer you discounts, so you can accept and continue with the connection if you feel you are getting a better deal.

Keep your Spectrum account number handy for reference.

Returning Spectrum Equipment

You would need to Return your Spectrum Equipment, like the router and the modem.

Dropping the equipment off in-store is the best choice because it removes the need to use third-party shipping that the other choices require.

Proof of an in-store dropoff would be difficult for Spectrum to overrule.

Shipping is via UPS is also possible.

Go to the nearest UPS with your equipment.

They have a system in place where they link the equipment you bring in with your Spectrum account.

If UPS is not available, you can try FedEx as well.

There is a home pickup option, but it’s only for disabled customers.

Mailing it directly to Spectrum via other services is not advisable since you would have to pay the equipment replacement fee.

If you did not return your equipment, you would have to cough up the equipment replacement fee as well.

This includes cases where the UPS box goes missing or if the package gets lost in transit.

Confirm Cancellation

Confirm with the customer representative that you want to cancel your internet.

Don’t forget to give them a date before the next payment due date to avoid paying for the next month.

Is There a Fee to Cancel Spectrum?

Since Spectrum does not put you in a contract, there are no cancellation fees or early termination fees.

All you need to do is asked them to cancel the internet and return the equipment.

The only fee that you would have to pay regarding cancellation is if the equipment return fails or if you are not returning the equipment.

Changing Spectrum Data Plans

If you just want to change your Spectrum internet plan, it’s easy to do as well.

Upgrades are the easiest thing to do.

Log in to your Spectrum account and select “Service Upgrades”.

Select the plan you want to upgrade to and continue.

Downgrades are a bit difficult because Spectrum wants you to pay more.

You would need to call them up for a downgrade, similar to how you’d cancel the service.

Getting What You Want

The whole point of contacting Spectrum was to be as assertive as possible while asking for a cancellation.

Being confident with your reasons and knowing what you want is very important when negotiating a cancellation.

This is very true for internet and cable services because they spend a lot of money studying the market and coming up with ways to retain customers.

If you cancel the connection just because speeds are really bad, reconsider what you want to do.

Because upgrading your router from the basic rental model to a Spectrum compatible mesh Wi-Fi router can pay dividends in the long run, especially if you have a home automation system.

The extended range can help you, especially if your Spectrum Internet Keeps Dropping.
