Preview Candy Cane Drawing Drawing PDFDownload PDFThe candy cane is a traditional candy of the Christmas holiday. It is a stick-shaped hard candy that is usually given to children and used in Christmas decorations.
During the Middle Ages, people began using peppermint oil to make sweet treats. These sweets were called “candy canes” because the sticks resembled the curved shape of a cane.
The history of the candy cane is not clear. It is a traditional Christmas candy but it’s origins are so clear. The most common story is that during a Christmas service in 1581, a choirmaster handed out sugar sticks to children to entertain and keep them quiet.
In an alternate story, which first appeared in print in the 1800s tells of a church choirmaster’s wife was making peppermint candy to sell as a fundraiser for their church and ran out of red food coloring so she substituted carnation pink from roses which she had growing near her home. A stiff white frosting was applied on top and then he dipped them into a pot filled with dark chocolate, creating the first candy cane
