Cap on faucet handle is STUCK!!

We have a Delta single handle faucet, 4-hole installation (soap dispenser, faucet, handle, sprayer). It has been leaking from the faucet so we are trying to replace the "guts" of the handle. We have loosened the setscrew and removed the handle. The next step is to remove the cap, but it won't budge! We've tried pliers with a jar-gripper pad. We even had strap wrenches - me holding the sleeve still while my husband tried to turn the cap. I think the whole thing has moved a bit, so I don't think we want to force it any more. My first thought was penetrating lubricant like we use on car parts, but that may be too potent to use in our kitchen faucet (drinking water and all). Should we just try to spray some WD-40 in the jount between the cap and sleeve and see if that can seep in? And as an add on - is there a touch up paint I can get to fix chips we're making/enlarging on the handle? It's just on the underside around the set screw area, and it's old so I'm not real concerned about having a perfect finish. Thanks in advance for any advice - this site helps us so much around the house! I rarely even have to post - I can usually search and find just what I need. Is it chrome or painted? You must be careful the pliers only bites that cap cover and not what is below it! Small pliers are like tinker toys. And something used to hold the grip may not necessarily be giving you leverage. You need leverage. Have you tried giant channel locks? I haven't been stymied on that type of faucet cap yet. You'd think if anybody would have, that I would have been by now - and I haven't. I've never needed help either in holding the entire faucet from rotating as I unloosen. I just push the left side of the faucet, with substantial enough force to counteract the rotating I am doing to the cap, as I loosen the cap with the giant pliers. How old is the faucet? If it is the style I am thinking about, you need to grasp the cap perfectly or else you are actually slightly ovaling the cap and will never get it off. I have had a few cases where it was completely impossible to repair the faucet and replaced it. I could not get it apart, and the whole valve was turning. You might try calling Delta's customer support line, but I doubt you will get too far. I have developed a simple and reliable technique for repairing even the most stubborn ones. Before beginning, make sure you have a replacement cap. The Danco 88756 cap fits Delta kitchen and lavatory faucets I have encountered. Using a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel, cut a vertical groove into the cap. Be sure to wear eye protection, and I recommend positioning a vacuum cleaner hose near the cut to collect debris. Cut as deeply as possible without cutting into the faucet body. If you do cut into the body, it's usually not a big deal as long as you don't go all the way through. I usually nick the body a little. Put a flat blade screwdriver in the groove and twist/pry until the cap breaks along the grove. If it won't break, cut the groove a little deeper and repeat until it breaks. The cap will now unscrew. Good luck! I am having the very same problem getting my Delta faucet apart. The only way I could see left was to use your cut-off wheel method. However, I wasn't sure what the end result would be. I'll get the cap tomorrow and give it a shot. -Chris Upvote cjm0061 View Public Profile Find all posts by cjm0061 #6 Old 04-25-10, 04:32 PM W Woodbutcher Member Join Date: Dec 1999 Location: San Diego Ca.
