New ChecklistAll ListsMy ChecklistsAllAll ListsMy ChecklistsThis Halo Infinite multiplayer Capture the Flag guide contains all the information you'll need to excel in the CTF game mode and all its variations. Halo Infinite has four CTF variations in total, playable on 7 playlist multiplayer maps.
Capture The Flag (CTF) is a returning game mode in Halo Infinite multiplayer which pits two teams against one another in a contest to gain control of a flag and bring it back to their team's home base.
How to Play Capture the Flag
Capture the Flag is an objective game mode where your team scores points by successfully stealing a flag and returning it to your base. Unlike other modes, you don't gain points for killing enemy players, although ridding the map of them can certainly help you claim the flag and safely guide it to your goal.
Most versions of this game mode require playing offense (stealing the flag) and defense (protecting your flag), so it's a good idea to communicate with your team to coordinate who will be doing what. Leaving your flag unguarded is a great way to let your flag get stolen.
In the event your flag does get stolen, killing the flag carrier and standing near the flag will return the flag to your base. The more allied players standing near it, the faster the flag will return. On the other hand, if enemy players are able to pick up the flag again, no matter how briefly, the timer is reset entirely. IF the flag goes over the edge of a cliff for whatever reason, it will be reset its original location.
Tips and Tricks for Capture the Flag
- Flag carriers are a whole lot weaker than in previous games. Whereas in previous Halo games the flag carrier could fight back with a pistol or beat down their enemies with a one-hit melee, Infinite gives you no weapons and takes away the one-hit melee. The only advantage you have is that your melee is a two-hit kill and you can melee faster than non-flag carriers.
- You can still drop the flag to fight back. Although you're weaker than ever before while carrying the flag, you can always drop it, kill someone, then pick it up again. Press the Switch Weapon button to drop the flag.
- Sprinting while carrying the flag in Capture the Flag lets all your enemies know where you are.
- You can use the grappleshot to pull the flag into your hands from a distance.
- Using vehicles is the easiest way to score. This may sound like a no-brainer, but it remains true in Halo Infinite, especially with the debuffs given to the flag carrier relative to other Halo games. You'll need at least one other player (a driver) to be your chaperone, but if you work together you can snag the flag and score in a fraction of the time it'd take on foot. Even smaller Arena maps like Behemoth have vehicles you can use for the deed!
- You can use the Repulsor to throw the flag farther. Throwing the flag is a great way to score some extra yardage in a tight game of CTF, but the Repulsor lets you add some serious distance to your throws. Just throw the flag using the Switch Weapon button and activate your Repulsor equipment to send the flag flying.
Capture the Flag Game Mode Variations
- Arena Capture The Flag: This version of CTF features a flag for each 4-player team. The goal is to capture the opposing team's flag while protecting your own flag from being stolen. The first team to capture the enemy flag three times is declared the winner. Games can last up to 12 minutes before the leading team is declared the winner or a tie is called. Arena CTF can be played by entering the Quick Play playlist or you can play it against bots in the Bot Bootcamp playlist.
- BTB Capture The Flag: This version of CTF is identical to Arena: Capture the Flag except it's much bigger -- each team has 12 players. Accordingly, the maps are also larger and lots of vehicles are dropped in for players to get around quickly. Games can last up to 15 minutes before the leading team is declared the winner or a tie is called. BTB: CTF can be played by entering the Big Team Battle playlist.
- One Flag CTF: This version of CTF is another 4v4 CTF mode, but each team takes turns defending or trying to steal a single flag. The game is broken up into four 3-minute rounds (two attacking and two defending rounds for each team) that end when the timer runs out or the attacking team capture the flag. At the end of four rounds, a winner or a tie is called. One Flag CTF can be played by entering the Quick Play playlist.
- Neutral Flag CTF: This version of CTF is another 4v4 mode that, but this time there's only one flag and it spawns on the map in an area not controlled by either team. Games last until the 10-minute timer runs out or one team captures the flag five times. This mode does not currently appear on any playlists, but can be accessed by creating a Custom Game and selecting "343 Industries" in the Mode Editor.
