How Does the Accelerator Work?

When you step on the “gas” pedal, your car accelerates thanks to a component called the throttle valve, which is connected to the engine. This part controls the airflow into the intake manifold. The air mixes with the fuel via the fuel injector or fuel rail. When the spark plug creates a spark, the fuel and air mixture ignites. This explosion causes the engine’s pistons to move. In turn, this allows the car to increase its revolutions per minute (rpm).

Signs of Accelerator Problems

Aside from slow acceleration, your car may also start roughly or hesitate when you apply pressure on the accelerator pedal. The problem, though, can be due to a number of issues, such as:

• Throttle sensor malfunction: If the throttle sensor fails, then the speed will fluctuate whether or not you engage or disengage the pedal.
• Fuel system failure: The fuel system supplies fuel to the engine. A faulty fuel pump or fuel injector can lead to acceleration problems.
• Bad spark plug: A worn spark plug cannot adequately ignite the fuel and air mixture.

The Solution

Only a maintenance specialist can determine the source of the problem. If your vehicle is not speeding up the way it normally should, then it probably has one of the above problems. These problems can lead to other issues that can affect the overall health of your car.
