Radiator Replacement

How much does a car radiator replacement cost?

A radiator replacement can cost between $450-$900+, depending on the type of vehicle and location of the radiator.

The radiator performs one of the most critical functions in the modern-day motor vehicle. It provides the means to remove the heat from the coolant that has just passed through the engine block before it makes its way back into the engine.

What is a radiator?

A radiator is a large heat transfer device that uses cooling air to remove the heat absorbed by the coolant from the combustion chamber. It is then pumped back into the engine by the water pump to carry out the process again.

Some radiators also have a separate cooling section for the automatic transmission fluid built in to eliminate the need for a second, smaller radiator.

What are the symptoms of needing a radiator replacement?

These are the symptoms you need to look out for when you think your car needs a radiator replacement:

  • Vehicle overheating
  • Vehicle leaking fluid (red, green or blue)
  • A hissing sound coming from under the bonnet after driving
  • Steam coming from under the bonnet when driving

How is a radiator replacement carried out?

The radiator will undergo an inspection for any signs of leaks or damage. If it's determined that the radiator needs replacing, the coolant will be drained.

Next, the cooling fans, radiator hoses, and transmission hoses (in vehicles with automatic transmissions) will be removed. The old radiator will then be extracted from the vehicle.

Following the removal, the cooling system will be flushed to eliminate any debris or residue that might have accumulated. The new radiator will then be installed, and the cooling fans, radiator hoses, and transmission lines will be refitted.

Once in place, the radiator will be filled with fresh coolant, and the system will be bled to remove any trapped air. Finally, the vehicle will undergo a road test to verify that everything operates as intended.

What is the average lifespan of a radiator?

A well-maintained radiator can last 8 to 10 years. Regularly replacing the coolant at the recommended intervals can extend your radiator's lifespan. Many manufacturers suggest changing the coolant every 5 years, depending on kilometres travelled.

How important is replacing the radiator?

The radiator is the main cooling system component in your vehicle, and failing to replace a faulty or leaking radiator can lead to expensive engine damage if overheating occurs.

Not only will this be costly, but it can also leave you stranded in an unsafe location waiting for roadside assistance.
