Cardiac Conditions: How to Qualify for Social Security Disability

Cardiac conditions are complex and difficult to evaluate in the Social Security process. The most common tests used to demonstrate the severity of a cardiac condition include chest X-rays, electrocardiograms, doppler ultrasound, nuclear stress test, plaque scans and blood work analysis. Diagnoses may include coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, ischemia, or atherosclerosis. Heart problems can also lead to numerous surgeries including artery stent placement, bypass procedures, and defibrillator/pacemaker installation.

The symptoms of heart trouble include unstable blood pressure, dyspnea, heart palpitation, headaches, and pain, numbness, or weakness in the torso or extremities. Other symptoms occur as the result of venous insufficiencies such as swelling, leg pain, pain with exertion, skin discoloration, varicose veins, and leg ulcers. Many cardiac symptoms initially present as extensive testing may only confirm irregular angina pectoris and more complex diagnoses.

Social Security has a medical listing section devoted explicitly to cardiac conditions. With proper medical evidence, anyone that meets the definition of a listing will be granted Social Security benefits. Twelve separate listings cover cardiac conditions. Different conditions covered under the medical listings include chronic heart failure, ischemic heart disease, recurrent arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, heart transplant, aneurysm of an aorta or significant branch, chronic venous insufficiency, and peripheral artery disease. The listings have complex requirements and even people diagnosed with these conditions may not qualify for disability under a listing. Even if a listing is not met, some cardiac conditions are severe enough to impose serious limitations on a claimant’s ability to perform essential work activities.

Premier Disability Services, LLC has extensive experience assisting claimants who suffer from a cardiac condition to obtain Social Security Disability benefits.  If you suffer from a cardiac condition and you are unable to work, please contact our office for a free evaluation.
