After about 5 years my tried and true well faded Carhartt Farm Coat was just so dirty on the outside I decided it was time for a wash... After filling the washing machine and realizing I had only @ 1/2 the wash powder I needed for a large load (coat only). I looked in the back of the cabnet and I spotted a gallon jug of Rug Doctor Carpet Cleaner. Well, yep you guessed it, lol... so I dumped a good bit in the washing machine and pressed Hot, Super Heavy Wash. Bottomline, had I known of the outcome I would have taken a before picture, yet let's say it was filthy. Dust, dirt and one arm was black in many places due to cleaning out a wood heater. Next time you have a dirty farm coat you need to clean, go get you some Rug Doctor Carpet Cleaner! Last edited: Apr 8, 2017

Contributor Now spray it with Thompson's Water Seal and let it air dry in the sun and it will be darn near waterproof and after it completely dries and sets out for about a day won't smell. The one I work in gets a dose about every year when either I can't stand it anymore or I make the mistake of letting it lay long enough for my wife to get ahold enough to get it in the washer.

That is great info on the Thompsons Water sealing. I have an off brand jacket that I am gonna try this on to see if I like the result before I hit my good Carheartt with it.

I have been using it in canvas for years. It has a strong smell to you air it out but once you do that it is gone. It makes it VERY water repellent and stain resistant also.
