Central City is a major city in the United States located in the state of Missouri. It was located 600 miles from Star City.[1] Despite being a landlocked city, the nearby Gardener River gave Central City the illusion of being a beach town.[2] Its sister city was Keystone City.[1]

Central City's power grid was being illegally used to excess by Scott Morgan's plant until The Hood stopped his operations.[3]

A particle accelerator was built by S.T.A.R. Labs, though not long after it being turned on ,it exploded, causing a shock-wave of dark matter to blow throughout the city. This resulted in the creation of 2,600 meta-humans.[4] Since then, Barry Allen/The Flash and Team Flash aided the Central City Police Department in fighting meta-human criminals.

Following a black hole that Team Flash failed to shut down before its creation, half of the city was destroyed.[5]

Central City was destroyed again and again as time went on: by the Earth-2 Metapocalypse, attacked by the Earth-X invasion, hit by fragments of the S.T.A.R Labs satellite at the end of Enlightenment, rewritten twice by the Book of Destiny, and then consumed in the antimatter wave.

Central City was incorporated in 1852, the same year a devastating flood hit the city.[6]

In 1860, Pony Express services begun delivering to the city.[7]

On December 11 2013, S.T.A.R. Labs had finished their controversial particle accelerator, which exploded, causing dark matter to radiate across the city, creating approximately 2,600 meta-humans.[4]

In 2015, half of Central City was nearly destroyed when a massive singularity appeared above it. The unstable wormhole was eventually stopped by the Flash and his team, but at the cost of Ronnie Raymond (and hence half of the Firestorm matrix), who sacrificed his life to close it.[5] Despite this, Central City credited the Flash for saving their city on Flash Day.[8]

In 2016, Central City was at the mercy of Zoom, and was the target for Zoom's meta-human group's invasion, resulting in the Metapocalypse, a devastating event, that forced Central City Police Department to fight off a whole invading army of meta-humans from Earth-2.[9]

In 2017, Central City was the site for a Nazi invasion from Earth-X.[10] With the combined forces of Team Flash, Team Arrow, the Legends, and Supergirl (from Earth-38) the invasion was repelled.[11]

On May 2018, Clifford DeVoe/The Thinker managed to put his plan into practice and began the Enlightenment, but with the help of Ralph and Barry, DeVoe was defeated, but parts of the S.T.A.R Labs satellite still fell in Central City, destroying parts of it and creating new meta-humans, as well as meta-tech.[12]

On December 2018, the Book of Destiny rewrote reality and made some significant changes; one swapped Barry and Oliver's lives, and another created a hero/tyrant named Superman. Even civilians were affected, such as police officers being turned into helpless taxi drivers. But during a confrontation, the book was destroyed and the effects restore the reality back to normal.[13]

On the stroke of midnight on December 10, 2019, after Barry and his team put an end to Bloodwork's reign of terror over Central City, the skies turned red over the city as Barry and his team looked on. This meant the Crisis has begun.[14] The city was ultimately destroyed in the Crisis (as seen beforehand in a vision of the neural hyper-collider[15]), but thanks to Oliver Queen's sacrifice as the Spectre, a new Central City was created on Earth-Prime.[16]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the show and DC comic books, Central City is in Missouri. In the DCEU, Central City is located in Ohio, overlapping/atop the real-life location of Athens in that state.
    • Despite being set in Missouri in the show, Central City is depicted as being on a coastline (or it could be a river that gives the illusion of being a beach town). This is because much of the production is in Vancouver, B.C., and Portland, Oregon, both situated near the Pacific Ocean.
      • This is explained by the city being situated on a large river that gives the impression of a coastline in some parts of the city.
  • Dinah Lance tells her daughter Laurel that she'll be "home in a flash", to Central City as a reference to Barry Allen, also known as the superhero The Flash, whose home is Central City in the DC comics, as well as the eponymous show's secret identity.

  • Portland, Oregon was used for aerial shots of both Central City and Opal City. Central City had S.T.A.R. Labs digitally added into shots of Southwest Portland, while tighter shots were later utilized for Opal City to obscure more noticeable similarities.
  • Central City, like Starling City (now Star City), has almost been destroyed a total of at least five times so far in the series. It was almost destroyed by a tidal wave on the waterfront during "Out of Time" in an alternate timeline, was again almost destroyed in "Plastique", was almost destroyed during "The Nuclear Man", was almost destroyed again during "Fast Enough" during the Singularity, and was finally destroyed completely by Vandal Savage in an alternate timeline, in "Legends of Yesterday", though it was erased. Then, Central City was attacked in the Metapocalypse, fired on by the Wellenreiter during the Earth-X Nazi invasion, and bombarded with fragments from the S.T.A.R Labs satellite during the Enlightenment, then being severely warped by John Deegan using the Book of Destiny, and later being consumed in a wave of anti-matter during the Anti-Monitor Crisis.
    • Ironically beating Star City in the many number of times the city has been destroyed.
  • The license plates in Central City read "Forever Free".
