Chalkboard 101 - How to Prime a Chalkboard

Ever heard of ghosting? And no, I am not referring to the dating term when someone you like just stops talking to you out of the blue. This type of ghosting is referring to chalkboard marks that are left behind even after you wipe down the board with an eraser. While you can write on it again, you are left with the shadow of previous words and images. This occurs when you use the chalkboard before you season and prime it. We want to help you prevent that from happening!

Before you start using the chalkboard, you want to start by priming it. This will close all the pores on the surface, making it easier to clean and write on. Trust us, you will thank us later. Priming a chalkboard can make all the difference in the world and it’s super easy.

What you will need for priming a chalkboard:

Chalkboard

Traditional white chalk

Chalkboard eraser

First take your chalk and turn it sideways. Cover the whole board with chalk in an up and down motion.

After you coat the board in a layer of chalk, repeat this process, but in a side-to-side motion covering the whole area of the board.

Next, take a chalkboard eraser and begin to wipe the chalk into the surface as if you are erasing everything you just chalked. Chalkboards are very porous and when you prime the whole board, all the pores get filled with the primer chalk. Think of it like when you use a primer before you paint a room. Same as a chalkboard, the priming seals the surface and fills in all the pores making it ready for the magic to happen.
