Career

After being suspended from Jones College Prep High School in 2011, Chance the Rapper recorded his first full-length mixtape titled 10 Day. The mixtape was a local hit, connecting him with Kenny Jame$, Chuck Inglish, and Blended Babies.

In 2012, Chance appeared on Childish Gambino’s mixtape Royalty and joined him on his first tour as his opening act. A year later, Chance released his second mixtape, Acid Rap, on DatPiff, which has since been downloaded over 1 million times. This mixtape was so well-received that Chance earned a nomination at the BET Hip Hop Awards for it.

Shortly after releasing Acid Rap, Chance the Rapper performed at Lollapalooza and was named by XXL magazine as part of its freshman class.

A Rap Icon

In 2015, Chance the Rapper was included on Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list, and he released the short film Mr. Happy. That same year, he lectured at Harvard and released his debut album Surf for free on iTunes as an exclusive. At the end of 2015, Chance debuted a new song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and he performed on Saturday Night Live.

In 2016, Chance was featured heavily on Kanye West’s album The Life of Pablo, and he joined Macklemore on This Unruly Mess I’ve Made. He then released his third mixtape, Coloring Book, which streamed exclusively on Apple Music.

By September 2016, Chance embarked on his Magnificent Coloring World Tour, which commenced in San Diego and concluded in Manchester, England. The following year, Chance the Rapper performed at the Grammy Awards and received seven nominations, winning three.

Chance the Rapper was busy in 2018, featuring on Cardi B’s debut album and performing at a tribute concert for Mac Miller, who passed from an accidental overdose. During Super Bowl LII, Chance appeared alongside the Backstreet Boys in a Doritos commercial and on Ed Sheeran’s “Cross Me.”

In July 2019, Chance released his debut studio album, The Big Day, and wrote “True Kinda Love” for Steven Universe: The Movie. Later that year, he canceled his second world tour to spend time with his newborn daughter.

Chance the Rapper became the new host of Punk’d when it was rebooted for the streaming service Quibi. In the same year, he was named host of the 2020 Kids’ Choice Awards, though the show was scrapped due to the pandemic. He also went on Twitter to support Kanye West’s presidential campaign, calling him more trustworthy than Joe Biden, a stance that drew criticism.

In 2021, he released the concert film Magnificent Coloring World and signed a first-of-its-kind distribution agreement with AMC Theatres. Chance became a coach on The Voice in 2023, though he opted not to return the following season except as an advisor.
