Introduction

Charlamagne tha God is an American professional radio presenter, television personality, and author with an estimated net worth of $10 Million.

Early Life

Lenard Larry McKelvey was born on the 29th of June, 1980, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

As a teenager, he began selling drugs and was arrested twice for possession of marijuana and cocaine. After witnessing a shooting from the back seat of a car, McKelvey was arrested for the third time. His father refused to pay his bail, and McKelvey remained in jail for 41 days.

Career

Charlamagne tha God began his career in radio as an intern at Z93 Jamz in Charleston and WHXT in Columbia. In 2006, he left South Carolina and became the second mic to Wendy Williams on her radio show, taking the stage name Charlamagne.

After becoming a public figure on the radio, Charlamagne made a name for himself by asking pointed questions during interviews with hip-hop artists. However, this often caused rifts between him and guests on the show, and in 2008, the show went off-air, and he was laid off.

Establishing Himself

In 2008, Charlamagne started hosting the morning show on 100.3 The Beat in Philadelphia, but he was fired a year later. This came after an interview with Beanie Sigel, who had released a diss track about Jay-Z, and people speculated Jay-Z was behind the firing.

Following his firing, Charlamagne lived with his mother for a year before being offered a position on WWPR-FM as the co-host of The Breakfast Club.

In 2010, Charlamagne began his job as co-host on air and the national simulcast on Revolt with DJ Envy and Angela Yee. Once he was established on the show, Charlamagne started referring to himself as the Prime Minister of Pissing People Off and the Architect of Aggravation. After a year, he began appearing on Guy Code, a comedy show on MTV2, and he remained on it until it was canceled in 2015.

Books & TV Shows

Charlamagne tha God starred in Charlamagne & Friends and co-hosted MTV’s New Year’s Live from Times Square from 2013 to 2015. At this point, Rolling Stone Magazine named him “hip-hop’s Howard Stern” and, in 2014, he began hosting Uncommon Sense with Charlamagne tha God on MTV2.

He then published his book Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It, which he called a self-help guide from the hood. This book received positive reviews and was ranked sixth on the New York Times best-selling list for hardback non-fiction. A year later, he published his second book, Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me, before becoming the host of Emerging Hollywood.

No Slowing Down

On Emerging Hollywood, a YouTube series, Charlamagne interviews Hollywood hotshots and talks to them about various political topics. Some of his most prominent guests on the show have included actress Jamella Jamil and Trevor Noah, who was then hosting The Daily Show.

In 2020, Charlamagne founded the Black Effect Podcast Network as part of a partnership with iHeartMedia.

Soon after, he and his Breakfast Club co-hosts, Angela Yee and DJ Envy, were inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. He then partnered with MTV2 personality Andrew Schulz to co-host The Brilliant Idiots podcast on Combat Jack’s Speakers Network.

In 2021, Charlamagne became the host of the late-night show Tha God’s Honest Truth on Comedy Central, which he also executive produces. Most recently, he has appeared as both a guest and a guest host on The Daily Show in 2023 and in an episode of the series Bumpkis.

Real Estate

In October 2020, Charlamagne paid $2.76 million for a 10,000-square-foot, six-bedroom home in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. The property had been on the market for as much as $4.2 million in August 2018. This is the first house he’s ever bought. Prior to the purchase, he’d been renting a house for roughly five years and also rented apartments in the past.
