Basketball Career
In 1984, the Philadelphia 76ers drafted Charles Barkley as the fifth overall pick, with Hakeem Olajuwon as the first overall pick. Despite being shorter than the average power forward, he became one of the NBA’s top scorers and rebounders using his muscle and tenacity.
Dream Team Domination And Winning Olympic Gold
In 1985, Barkley was included in the NBA All-Rookie First Team, along with Michael Jordan, who was also named to the team. Following his first rebounding championship in 1986–1987, Barkley led the NBA in rebounding average and was selected MVP of the NBA All-Star Game.
He won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as a “Dream Team member, ” including teammates Larry Bird and Michael Jordan. To top it off, Charles won the NBA MVP award while playing for the Phoenix Suns, beating Michael Jordan for the award. In 1993, he led the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals, where he played against Michael Jordan, who later joined the Chicago Bulls.
At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, he demonstrated his basketball skills by winning another gold medal with teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Scottie Pippen. After his gold medal win, he was traded to the Houston Rockets in the 1996-97 season, joining Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.
A Fiery Start And A Fitting Farewell
Barkley was suspended during the inaugural season for assaulting Charles Oakley, who is also known for his physical and aggressive style of play.
Charles displayed his ability to grab rebounds when he recorded a career-high 33 rebounds in a game against the Rockets while serving a suspension. During that season, he battled multiple injuries and suspensions during the 1996-97 season, similar to other tough players like Allen Iverson and Derrick Rose.
Even though he persevered despite his ailments, the Utah Jazz, led by Karl Malone and John Stockton, ultimately eliminated him. Barkley became the second player, alongside Wilt Chamberlain, to achieve 23,000 Points, 12,000 Rebounds, and 4,000 assists and announced his retirement at the same time. He returned from injury to play one last game and scored a memorable basket, which Magic Johnson inspired during his comeback game.
From Hall Of Famer To Media Mogul
Charles was re-inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 alongside Dominique Wilkins, having previously been a member of the Dream Team.
Additionally, he was named to the NBA’s All-Interview Team for 13 consecutive seasons and is known for his rivalry and friendship with Shaquille O’Neal. He is also known for on—and off-court fights and controversial statements, often being compared to Dennis Rodman in terms of contentious behavior.
Charles famously declared that sports figures should not be considered role models, a sentiment echoed by fellow athletes Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan. He has received multiple honors during his career, including four Sports Emmy Awards for his analysis of the NBA and for writing numerous books.
He was inaugurated into the Phoenix Suns’ Ring of Honor with Steve Nash and named to the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Besides NBA greats LeBron James and Tim Duncan, Barkley is ranked 22nd in The Athletics list of the top 75 players.
