Hi to everybody, I want to know, if there is any regulation to choose the alpha level in a ANOVA study? How it influence the acceptation or dismiss of a hypothesis? and if there is a acceptance criteria to choose the level in a study. Thanks in advance. It is 0.05 because I said so.....:sarcasm::sarcasm: Selection of the p-value for any statistical analysis is decided by the person doing the analysis based on the risk. The alpha level is just the Type I error. J

In an ANOVA calculation, you will always have a p-value as an output. You must decide yourself if the p-value correlates to a statistically significant difference in your hypothesis. The alpha value is just your cut-off for acceptance of p-values in an ANOVA calculation and is not used for calculations. Alpha values ARE used in confidence intervals. The lower the alpha, the wider the confidence interval. Miner

Leader Admin You should define the consequence if you make a Type 1 error. If that consequence is high, as in it will result in high cost or injury, select a low alpha value such as 0.01. If the consequence is very low, you may want to select an alpha of 0.10. If it is moderate, select the typical 0.05. Bottom line, set alpha based on the consequences if you are wrong and your risk tolerance. You must log in or register to reply here.
