Chris Penn Had Illness And 'drug Use History' - Irish Examiner

Investigators suspect actor Chris Penn’s death was the result of natural causes or an accident because he had a prior illness and had taken drugs in the past, a coroner’s spokesman said today.

The 40-year-old actor, the younger brother of Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn and musician Michael Penn, was found dead in his condominium in Santa Monica, California, on Tuesday.

Penn had suffered from an illness and used multiple drugs in the past, David Smith, a Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman, said. He declined to release details of the illness or say whether the drugs were prescribed.

Medical examiners performed an autopsy yesterday but will not know what caused Penn’s death until toxicology tests are completed in about six weeks.

Penn appeared in numerous films, including Reservoir Dogs, Starsky & Hutch, Rush Hour and Corky Romano.

Among the tributes to Penn, actor Charlie Sheen said he was the "best friend a guy could ever hope for".

Sheen and his sibling Emilio Estevez grew up with Penn and his brother Sean, and his father Martin Sheen was one of the first to arrive on the scene of the mystery death to comfort the Reservoir Dogs star's mother.

In a statement from the Platoon star, Sheen also calls his pal "a good and decent man", adding: "I loved him."
