Chuck comes home after getting a haircut and the curls are gone. (from yourubikscubedme)

After spending so many long days down in Castle, four in a row to be exact, it felt good to sit on her couch in her own home, alone, in a quiet apartment, with nothing but a good book to keep her company.
When Sarah had first gotten home from dropping Morgan off at the airport three hours earlier, she’d considered trying to figure out Chuck’s record player, thinking a little music and a half-nap sounded nice. But then the silence had been so good, and then there was intimidating realization that she might break his record player if she did something wrong.
In the end, she’d grabbed her book from her bedside and plopped down on the couch, enjoying the book and the solitude.
If anyone had told her five years ago that she would someday be able to sit in one spot and read the same book for three hours straight, she would have laughed. But there was something about settling down that had made rest and relaxation not only palpable, but necessary for the young CIA agent.
It had never been that way before. Before Operation Bartowski. Before Chuck.
Her life had been one long mission, characters popping in and out, a constant change of scenery. Upon graduating out of the Farm and moving onto real missions, Sarah went full throttle, going on mission after mission after mission, without the down time in between. She hadn’t needed down time. She hadn’t wanted it. Never settling in one place had somewhat filled the holes and gaps that existed in her life, enough so that she didn’t even recognize their existence in the first place. That was how she liked it. Constant movement.
Things had changed since then. Being in Los Angeles with Chuck Bartowski and Casey, and everyone else who was here with her now—it had made things in her life clearer. At first, she’d been trapped here, and that had forced her to recognize the holes and the gaps in her life.
In a lot of ways she had been forced to watch how real people lived, people who didn’t live in the shadows, who didn’t skirt around the globe “saving the world”, as Chuck liked to put it. And she had realized just how badly she wanted the same thing.
But being in one place for longer than a week—over three years in fact—had made Sarah settle. For the first time since she first began traveling with her father as a child, she had roots firmly planted in one place. It had happened soon after she’d come here, vowing to protect the big-hearted nerd who had been cursed with carrying a government database in his head. But now she lived with him. (And his best friend. But Morgan Grimes was now well on his way to Houston for some sort of video game conference and God willing he would stay the whole weekend like he’d promised.)
Having an actual home where she could put her things and cook her own food, and leave her shoes anywhere she wanted—it turned out relaxation started coming naturally to her. She didn’t have to be constantly on the move, because the gaps and holes were filled. It wasn’t just Chuck, but everything else that came with him. A sense of self-worth, satisfaction in her work, comfort, friendships, family, and the glorious feeling of just sitting and doing absolutely nothing at all.
Sarah Walker had gotten really good at doing absolutely nothing at all, and she thought perhaps it had happened on that train through Europe all those months ago. She’d done nothing for days on end. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. She’d done something. And a lot of it. Chuck had been heavily involved in that something.
She felt her eyes slip shut as she took a deep breath. Chuck—and Ellie, Morgan, Devon, even Casey—had given her a place where she wanted to be. She didn’t want to leave California, or LA, or even this apartment at the moment. Because she was home.
For the first time since she was a little girl, she was home.
And just as she thought that, the star player in this wonderful change of events opened their front door. She didn’t have to look because she knew it was him. She’d heard him fiddling with his keys outside, and she’d heard the humming as he walked in.
“Sarah?”
All she did was lift a hand from where she sat on the couch, a smile on her lips as she looked down at the page she was no longer reading.
“Ah! There she is.”
She heard him set his bag on a chair at the table and cross to the couch. And then he was right behind her, leaning down over her and wrapping his arms around her, pressing his lips to her temple and humming softly. “Mmm, hi.”
“Hello.” She slipped her bookmark in the book and set it aside, reaching up to drag her fingers through his curls as she turned her face to give him the welcome home kiss she had wanted to when she first heard his keys outside.
But when her fingers weren’t immediately enveloped by the soft, delicious curls she was used to, her eyes snapped open and she pulled out of the kiss with a loud smack. As it so happened, Chuck wasn’t having that, so she found herself involved in another long kiss.
His hair was without curl. Curl-less. They were still there. Sort of. But…
Sarah pulled back again and extracted herself from his arms, spinning around and climbing to her knees. She framed his face and looked at her boyfriend closely. He looked so different, but the same…but so different.
“Your hair! It’s so short.”
He shrugged a little sheepishly. “Sorry?”
“Why is it so short?” She did her best to keep from sounding upset about it because she really wasn’t. She had never seen him with such short hair. The messy curls, the curl-helmet, the curls she liked to twist her fingers in when he rested his head in her lap, the curls she pulled when they made love…they’d always been such a large part of him. Even before they were physically intimate.
And now they were gone and he was…so very dashing.
She felt the side of her mouth begin to turn up as she realized Chuck with shorter hair wouldn’t take quite so long to get used to.
He reached up and ruffled his own hair. “You can still do that! I know you like that.”
That made her giggle. “No, Chuck, I like it. It’s just so different. I’m not used to being able to see the shape of your head.”
“Do I look bad?”
“Mm mm.” She shook her head and smiled widely. “To be honest with you, it’s pretty sexy. Why’d you do it?”
He grinned back and slid his arms around her waist, tugging her closer and nuzzling her nose. “I went into the barbershop and he was prepping the shaving cream and all that, asking if I wanted a trim, and I just had this overwhelming urge to do something new.”
“Mixing it up, huh?” she flirted.
“Yeah,” he drawled back, nudging her nose with his own again. “Do you really like it? Because if you don’t, it’ll grow back. Really really fast. That’s kinda what it does.” He reached up to point to his head, doing his patented eyebrow dance.
She moistened her lips and then bit her bottom one, reaching up to rub a hand over his head slowly. So slowly that she felt Chuck shiver in her arms. The look in his eyes changed then and she did her best to ignore it, just for a moment.
She wanted to tease him first.
“Well, let’s put it this way. You look sexy.” He grinned. She wasn’t sure she’d ever had a reaction this intense to a simple haircut before. But she’d never had a reaction this intense to another person, either. All of this was still new, even though they’d been dating for months, living together for months.
“But…” she continued, running her fingers over his head and down to the back of his neck. “My fingers don’t have anywhere to go now…”
Her pout made his golden eyes darken to a deep brown and his grip tightened on her. “I’m sorry about that,” he said in a deep voice. And he crashed his lips to hers in a fiery kiss that lasted long enough to make her forget her knee was now making a deep imprint in the paperback book she’d just been reading and had recklessly smashed in her efforts to get a good look at her sans-curls nerd.
When they pulled away, she kept her forehead pressed against his, her hand stroking along his jaw and feeling how amazingly smooth it was. And the shaving cream his barber had used smelled fantastic and she was slowly losing her mind now, as he dotted kisses over her face and down to her neck. “It’s alright…” she breathed, needing to somehow get on the other side of the couch back that was between them at the moment. And to the bedroom, preferably.
His hair still felt so soft against her cheek and this needed to happen a bit more quickly.
Of their own volition, her fingers latched onto his belt and tugged teasingly. Chuck lifted his head and looked at her with wide eyes and a slow smile.
“…I can find something else to do with my fingers.”
She was only able to get half a shrug in, as her spy nerd hoisted her over the couch so that she was forced to wrap her legs around his waist. She yelped and began to laugh as he walked her down the hallway.
And despite the new haircut, the luscious curls no longer there for her to rake her fingers through, she found a few minutes later that the sensation of having his soft hair rub against her bare skin was just as pleasurable as it had been before.
