Cimo Can Spell is a great app for beginning readers to learn words. Some of the apps 1,122 words can be sounded out using common phonics rules (i.e, grouped by short vowel, long vowel, Bossy R's and other vowel team words --968 words), and others do not follow those normal rules and must be memorized (i.e, beard, climb, flood, great, snow, world etc. --154 words). Learning to spell these words adds to a strong foundation in reading and spelling for beginning readers. This app also uses phonics to help your child learn new words by putting sounds together to make words (like /b/ /a/ /t/ bat). So your child will be able to read and write words correctly without memorizing. So your child would be able to spell words correctly without memorizing. In this game, your child will help Cimo the penguin reach an iceberg to catch fish. Each correct letter chosen adds a block to his bridge. Finish the word and Cimo can cross, but watch out for wrong letters, or Cimo will take a dip! This is the fun game to improve your child's spelling abilities.Cimo Can Spell also includes a progress report for parents. The report allows them to track their child’s performance in spelling the sound out words, and provides play history with game details (i.e, On this date, your child has played level 1 and level 2 and in each game, what item has been asked and what your child has answered). An additional setup option allows for a parent or teacher to control the level of word difficulty and customize the number of questions to match their child (i.e, CVC words are included in easy level, digraphs are in medium level and blends are in the difficult level). Also included are the options for self-correction (i.e, kids could correct their answer in the second try) and clearing out all the reports.     Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2012Verified Purchase I purchased this app hoping it would help my son who is having "letter sound recognition" difficulties.This app does not help by sounding out the word & letters to help the child spell the word. It sounds out the word AFTER the child spells it out correctly!! What good is that?!It would be more helpful if the app would sound out the letters when the child pressed on the letter in order to help them spell out the word.     Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2013Verified Purchase We've tried a few different spelling apps and this one seems like one of the better ones for early readers.It uses phonics and my 5 year old could confidently read the level 1 words and is looking forward to moving on to the other levels. My 8 year old found the later levels a little simple, but still fun. The penguin is sweet and lots of words are included as well as 6 distinct levels.. We are in UK and this is American so I wasn't sure if the accents and approach to reading would be ok, but it seems fine. Read more Report
