If it is still not clear to you, Cinco de Mayo is one of the most important celebrations for the Mexican-American community, we could even say that this day has a greater significance in the United States than in Mexican territory.

In different parts of the country this day is celebrated, although we can say that many of the people who enjoy Cinco de Mayo are not clear about its origins, so here we explain a little about it.

Why is Cinco de Mayo celebrated?

This date refers to the Battle of Puebla, a Mexican state where the Mexican army, with just over 2,000 men, defeated the much larger French army on May 5, 1862 in a war between the two countries, a date that has been marked for history.

However, in the United States this date has become the ideal celebration of Mexicanness amidst parades, food, culture, mariachi, Latin music, which even the fact that in 2022 this day falls on a Thursday does not minimize its festive air.

Cities that celebrate Cinco de Mayo in a big way

Los Angeles, California

Undoubtedly the city that celebrates this day the most, due to its huge Mexican-American population, with the largest Cinco de Mayo festival in the country, the Fiesta Broadway Festival, a classic for three decades with food and a street fair.

San Antonio, Texas

If Los Angeles celebrates Cinco de Mayo in a big way, what can we say about San Antonio? Its celebration lasts not just one day, but a week from May 1 to 6, honoring the establishment of the Alamo Mission in San Antonio, a historic Roman Catholic mission and fortress.

You can't miss the Friday night fireworks or the live music, folk dancing, performances and more events that take place in Market Square.

San Diego, California

California has too many reasons to host this celebration as San Diego was the first Spanish settlement on the west coast of America. Old Town San Diego Historic Park usually hosts every year the Fiesta Old Town Cinco to visit the Mercado Artesanal and eat all kinds of typical Mexican food at restaurants like Café Coyote and Fred's Mexican Cafe, plus events like wrestling and Mexican folkloric dances.
