Citing Electronic Resources - Chicago (Turabian) Style

The Chicago Manual of Style 16th Edition, and its condensed counterpart, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Turabian Style) provides information through the Chicago Manual of Style Online website.  For more information about Chicago citation, consult a librarian or check out the Chicago manual which is on reserve in the library.

Electronic Databases

For items retrieved from a subscription database, add the name of the database and an accession number following the facts of publication, or whatever itentifying information is available in the database listing:  a DOI for the article; the name of the database and the number assigned by the database; or a stable URL for the article.  For example, if you accessed an article through one of the article databases online, such as JSTOR or Social Sciences Index, follow this guideline:

Author Last, Author First. Title of Article. Title of Journal. Volume, issue number (year of publication): page range.           DOI or database name and article number or stable URL.

Example for a bibliography of an article retrieved from JSTOR:

Nolan, Justin M. and Mary Jo Schneider. "Medical Tourism in the Backcountry: Alternative Health and Healing in the Arkansas Ozarks."           Signs 36, no. 2 (2011): 319-326. doi: 10.1086/655911.

World Wide Web

To cite a personal web site, use the following structure:

Author Last, Author First.  Title of Document. Title of Site. Sponsor of Site. Publication date or modified date;           date of access if none. URL of document.

Example of a personal site:

Murphy, Britt Anne.  Citing Electronic Resources.  Bailey Library.  Hendrix College. September 9, 2011.           http://www.hendrix.edu/baileylibrary/baileylibrary.aspx?id=1621.
