How the clutch works

The clutch is part of the car transmission system, and serves the purpose of breaking the transmission of power from the engine to wheels when needed. This is so that the engine can continue to spin while the wheels do not, when you bring the car to a stop. The clutch mechanism also allows the wheels to either spin at the same or different speeds from the engine.

The clutch is present in both the auto and manual transmission cars. Due to usage, particularly in manual cars with the shifts in gear sticks to engage and disengage the engine, a clutch repair may be needed at some point. This however, typically happens only after a significant mileage has been clocked, typically around 100,000 km with proper care.

The common problem of the clutch is the wearing down of the frictional portion on the clutch disc. The wearing down is inevitable as there are times when the clutch disc and the flywheel are turning at different speeds and the frictional material is what enables this to happen. The flywheel serves the purpose of ensuring a smooth power transfer, from the engine to the drive train, reducing the vibration. When much of the frictional material on the clutch disc is worn out, the clutch will then slip.  Power then would not be transmitted from the engine to the wheels.

Typically, as it is the parts that are subject to wear and tear that needs to be replaced, a clutch repair cost is usually not high. These parts include the clutch disc, the release and pilot bearing. If your clutch is fairly new and yet it is causing slipping issues, it could be that a mis-alignment with the release bearing, or that there is contamination or the transmission fluid used is too thick. We would then carry out an adjustment to the alignment for you, and clean the parts.

Flywheel replacement 

The flywheel can also get worn out in the transmission process, and there may be cracks or scratches that develop. To ensure a continued smooth transmission process, we can then re-surface the flywheel if this has developed grooves, or if this is badly damaged, carry out a flywheel replacement.
