A Rs.10 coin stuck inside a seven-year-old boy’s stomach for many days was successfully removed within minutes recently by doctors at the Government Rajaji Hospital through a delicate endoscopy procedure.
K. Santosh, son of a welder Kannan from Mettu Theru at Manamadurai in Sivaganga district, swallowed the coin while playing with some of his friends.
Since the coin was not excreted as the boy’s parents had hoped, they took him initially to the Government Hospital at Manamadurai and later to the one at Sivaganga.
X-Ray results showed that the coin was stuck in the boy’s stomach and he was having mild pain.
He was later referred to the GRH where the doctors at the Paediatric Surgery and Gastroenterology departments decided to perform an endoscopic procedure to remove the foreign body from the boy’s stomach.
Interacting with the media on the procedure, B. Hemant Kumar, head of the Paediatric Surgery department, said that the endoscope equipment was inserted through the oesophagus and the coin was removed from the boy’s stomach in three minutes. The doctors said that the coin had turned black as it was immersed in gastric acid inside the stomach.
The doctors said that around 20 cases every month of children swallowing objects like coins and small batteries used in watches are reported at the GRH. They said that while in most of the cases the objects would automatically be excreted in a few days, a few cases would require endoscopy procedure.
MR Vairamuthu Raju, Dean, GRH, M. Veera Sekar, Medical Superintendent, and M. Kannan, Assistant Professor with the Gastroenterology department, were also present.
