Deutschland English, US Hello everyone, When I moved to Mexico a few months ago, I learned "más o menos" as a possible response to the question "Cómo estás" or "Qué tal." I have had some different responses when I've said "más o menos" which make me uncertain of the connotation... for instance, when I continue "y tú," sometimes people say "también bién," and sometimes they ask me what's wrong. That makes me wonder... is the expression more negative or more positive? It had seemed rather neutral to me when I started using it, dependent on tone of voice... Thanks so much! Pliscapoivre Click to expand...Well, if I asked you how you are and you said "más o menos" to me, I'd probably ask what's wrong... It's like "so-so" in English: the response depends on the listener. Barranquilla Spanish-Colombia Well, at least in my country, when we say "más o menos", we mean that not everything is good. So, for me it has more like a negative connotation, and that's why people would ask you "what's wrong?"; but I repeat, that's in my country.suso26

Spanish México. i think that that expression is more negative than positive, because when you answer that you are not good at all.. It's like "so, so" Como estas? Mas o menos.. me ha ido mal.. DDCPaco

Planet Earth Spanish of Mexico/ English of the USA The expression is like so-so...it all depends on the tone of voice you are using. If you say: más o menos, it may imply something is wrong and usually if you were doing well you wouldn't use this expression. But if you are smiling when you say it, they're understanding that you're doing okay and concur that they too are doing well. Aguascalientesnnnnnnn! (Quick question that has nothing to do with your posting: has the water gotten cold there? When I went there many years ago (my mother is from Ags., Ags., the spring was still hot...but I've heard from relatives that they spring no longer releases hot water.) Saludos Hidrocálidos!Pliscapoivre

Saludos Hidrocálidos![/quote] Thanks, everyone. That was really helpful. The springs are sort of hot, but not really satisfactory -- at the bath houses, it's around 37 degrees even though a few promise 40. The cold water in the taps in all houses, though, runs rather warm after a minute or so... Take care! You must log in or register to reply here.
