Minecraft Composters are blocks that you can use to produce Bone Meal. Much like composters in real life, they require biological material to function, breaking it down into something usable in the agricultural processes available in the game.

The Composter is also the job block associated with the Farmer profession for Villagers. Here’s everything you need to know to make a Minecraft Composter, and how to use it.

How to Craft a Composter

After constructing a Composter using Wooden Slabs in a ‘U’ shape, place it down and gather as many plant-based items as you have. From Saplings to Seeds, from vegetables to fruit, Flowers, Mushrooms, and Grass are all viable items to compost.

With those items, interact with the Composter and you’ll begin to see a layer (similar in appearance to Podzol) building up and up inside the Composter the more items you add. Once the Composter is full, the texture on top will change to include white chunks, and at that point, you’ll be able to collect Bone Meal from it.

As such, a Composter is an excellent way of acquiring Bone Meal, regardless of whether you play on Peaceful or a harder difficulty; either way, you can use up your harvested produce if your storage is overfilled, and you also won’t have to face off against armies of Skeletons to try and acquire Bone Meal that way.

Composters can also be used if you are near a Village, as any Villager who hasn’t got a profession can interact with a Composter and become a farmer, helping to grow plots in the immediate vicinity.
