Concord, North Carolina - 1942

Concord's history dates back over two hundred years. Back in the late 1700s, it seems there was a disagreement between the German and Scots-Irish settlements in the area over exactly where the County Seat of the newly-formed Cabarrus County should be located or what it should be named. A compromise was eventually reached, and the new city was founded in 1796 on a twenty-six acre site. As typical of the times, the County Seat was first called Cabarrus Court House. After a lengthy debate, in 1819 the city was named Concord, meaning "harmony," to reflect the spirit in which the issue was settled.

On May 20, 1819, the US Post Office Department officially changed the name to Concord, with Postmaster Mr. Silas Travis.
