One and all knows that a day includes 24 hours, one hour contains 60 minutes, and finally, a minute is equal to 60 seconds. After simple computations, the evident result appears about the relation between days and second. A solar day consists of 86 400 seconds. Clocks are related to the solar day. This is a cycle when the sun comes back to the same place in the sky. This was a true definition until the 1950s. But science changed that understanding. Scientists realized that the Earth's rotation wasn't uniform enough to measure seconds consistently. So they chose a more accurate method to describe seconds as a fraction of a year, or how long it requires the Earth to orbit the sun. That exact amount of time can vary slightly from year to year. So in 1960 it was announced by the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures (GCWM) that the small unit of time would be based on the year 1900. The year was computed to be equal to 365.242198 days. It means that the conference approved the second as 1/(365.242198 * 86 400) of the year. But it was not enough such a position. Scientists have been working on other definitions and formulas. They decided to bind it to the parameters of an atom. The chemical element cesium 133 has just one electron in its outermost shell. In 1958 physicists noticed that this electron switched from one presumable spin to the other and back again 9 192 631 770 times per second. The 13th GCWM improved the determination of a second to this atomic standard in 1967. The world uses such a description until now. But scientists do not sleep and want to provide even more precise standards. Some atoms like strontium have measurable oscillations 100 000 times faster than cesium. These so-called optical clocks have been known in physicists' society. But it's challenging to keep them running reliably. With the help of lasers, it can be possible to keep track of the oscillations of the chemical element. The clocks could tick for 14 billion years and only be off by 100 seconds. These more accurate clocks could make GPS satellites precise down to the millimeters, or make more accurate internet monitoring, or faster business transactions. |
