Converting Fractions to Decimals

Study Guide

Key Definition

A decimal representation of a fraction can be terminating or repeating. A fraction in lowest terms will terminate exactly when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 or 5; otherwise, its decimal expansion repeats.

Important Notes

  • The numerator is divided by the denominator.
  • Repeating decimals can be written with a bar over the repeating part.

Mathematical Notation

$\frac{a}{b}$ means 'a divided by b'Remember to use proper notation when solving problems

Why It Works

By dividing the numerator by the denominator, we are essentially finding how many times the denominator fits into the numerator. This value is expressed as a decimal.

Remember

A decimal is just a special way of writing a fraction.
