Cornhole Rules

Players and the Game

  1. All teams must have two players.
  2. Boards will be placed 27 feet apart from the front end of each board.
  3. To win a game, a team must score 21 points. If a team goes over 21, it will be dropped to 15 points. The game does not end until the frame is over.
  4. A frame consists of players tossing their bags, alternating shots, until all eight bags in the frame have been thrown.
  5. The winning team will advance to the next round of the tournament. Teams that lose the first round will have a chance to continue by way of a wild card drawing.

Throwing Bags

  1. To start each game, teams will rock-paper-scissors to determine who will toss first.
  2. After each frame, the team that scores will toss first.
  3. If after a frame, the teams score an equal number of points, the team that tossed second in the previous frame will toss first.
  4. Players must pitch the bag with an under-hand release.
  5. Players must pitch the bag with both feet behind the front end of the board from which they are throwing.

Scoring

  1. Bag values
    1. Bag on the board = 1 point
    2. Bag in the hole = 3 points
  2. At the end of a frame, the team with the most net points (cancellation scoring) scores the net points to its total for the game.
    1. In cancellation scoring, the points of one player cancel out the points of their opponent. Only one team can score in each frame.
  3. Points will not be scored during a frame if:
    1. A pitched bag hits any object off the board or the ground.
    2. A player pitches the bag from in front of the board.
    3. Any bag that is not delivered within the 20-second time limit to pitch a bag.

These rules have been adapted from GVSU's Recreation & Wellness and Intramural Sports website.
