Key takeaways
- Vyvanse is a brand-name drug that’s also available as generic lisdexamfetamine. In general, generics cost less than brand-name drugs.
- Vyvanse is available as capsules or tablets that you chew. It also comes in several strengths. The drug’s price may depend on the form and strength you’re prescribed.
- Like many drugs, Vyvanse typically costs less with insurance than without it. But coupons and savings cards can help lower your out-of-pocket costs if you don’t have insurance.
Vyvanse cost and coupons
Vyvanse retail price$The retail price of Vyvanse is $.As with all medications, the cost of Vyvanse can vary. Factors that may affect the price you’ll pay include:
- your Vyvanse dosage, including the form and strength you’re prescribed
- your insurance coverage
- the pharmacy you use
- whether Vyvanse has a savings program (see the “Vyvanse savings card” section)
To find out what the cost of Vyvanse will be for you, talk with your doctor, pharmacist, or insurance provider.
Coupons and savings
To save money on your Vyvanse prescription, explore these Optum Perks coupons.
Vyvanse savings card
Vyvanse’s manufacturer previously offered a Vyvanse savings card. With this card and an eligible insurance plan, it was possible that you could pay no more than $15 per refill.
However, the Vyvanse savings card is no longer available.
If you need help paying for Vyvanse, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. You may be able to get lisdexamfetamine (generic Vyvanse) at a lower cost than the brand-name drug. And you may be able to use other coupons to help reduce your out-of-pocket costs. For more information, see the “Financial and insurance assistance” section.
Brand-name vs. generic drugs
The active ingredient of Vyvanse is lisdexamfetamine. Vyvanse tablets and capsules are both available as the generic drug lisdexamfetamine. A generic drug is considered to be as safe and effective as the original drug. And generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs.
If your doctor has prescribed Vyvanse and you’re interested in taking lisdexamfetamine instead, talk with your doctor. They may have a preference for one version or the other. You’ll also need to check with your insurance provider, as it may only cover one or the other.
To find out how lisdexamfetamine’s cost compares with the cost of Vyvanse, talk with your doctor, pharmacist, or insurance provider.
WHY ARE COSTS DIFFERENT FOR BRAND-NAME DRUGS VS. GENERIC DRUGS?Brand-name drugs can be expensive because of the research needed to test their safety and effectiveness. The manufacturer of a brand-name drug can sell it for up to 20 years. When the brand-name drug’s patent expires, multiple manufacturers can create generic versions. This marketplace competition may lead to lower costs for generics. Also, because generics contain the same active ingredients as brand-name drugs, they don’t require the same costly testing.
Common questions about cost and Vyvanse
Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about drug cost and Vyvanse.
What is Vyvanse’s price with insurance vs. without it?
The costs of Vyvanse with and without insurance depend on several factors. This includes the pharmacy you use and your insurance coverage. To learn more about these factors, see the “Vyvanse cost and coupons” section.
To learn more about the costs of Vyvanse with and without insurance, talk with your insurance provider or pharmacist.
Will drug shortages affect Vyvanse’s cost?
Vyvanse shortages don’t directly affect how much the drug costs. However, it’s possible for a shortage to indirectly affect the price you pay for Vyvanse.
If a drug shortage affects your particular dose, your doctor might prescribe a combination of strengths to achieve the correct dosage. For example, if you take 70 milligrams (mg) of Vyvanse daily, your doctor may prescribe 40-mg and 30-mg strengths to be taken together.
If this happens, you’ll likely need to pay for each prescription separately. This means you could pay twice as much for your typical Vyvanse prescription during a shortage.
If you need help paying for Vyvanse, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. They can recommend ways to save money on your prescription. And if you can’t afford Vyvanse due to drug shortages, your doctor can recommend other treatment options that may work for you.
Ways to reduce long-term drug costs
If you take Vyvanse long term, you may be able to lower its cost in the following ways.
Getting a 3-month supply
You may be able to get a 90-day supply of Vyvanse. If approved by your insurance company, getting a 90-day supply of the drug could reduce your number of trips to the pharmacy and help lower the cost. If you’re interested in this option, check with your doctor, pharmacist, or insurance provider.
Using a mail-order pharmacy
Vyvanse may be available through a mail-order pharmacy. Using this type of service may help lower the drug’s cost and allow you to receive your medication without leaving home. Some Medicare plans may help cover the cost of mail-order medications. You may also be able to get a 90-day supply of the drug via mail order.
If you don’t have health insurance, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. They may be able to suggest online pharmacy options that could work for you.
Financial and insurance assistance
If you need financial support to pay for Vyvanse, or if you need help understanding your insurance coverage, help is available. For example:
- Some websites provide details about drug assistance programs, ways to make the most of your insurance coverage, and links to savings cards and other services. Two such websites are:
