The next step is to count how many of these sounds exist within individual words and even sentences. These worksheets will help students learn to find these sounds and be able to classify them.

How Do You Count Phonemes in Words?

Phonemes are basically vocal gestures that are used to form words. Phonemes are taught to young children who have just started to understand the English language. All of our words are constructed from phonemes. There are a total of 42 phonemes in English. Counting phonemes in words is one of the easiest ways to pronounce a word correctly. However, it can get a little confusing when the number of phonemes does not equal the number of letters in a word. Here are a few ways through which you can count phonemes in a word.

Use The Thumb Rule

This is a very simple rule to count phonemes in a word. All you have to do is to select a word that you would be counting phonemes of. Then start pronouncing the word. Each time there is a movement inside your mouth, count it. The movement could be of anything. It could be your lips or tongue. It can also be the opening or closing of the mouth or a change in vibration of the vocal cords.

If we take the example of the word though; you will notice two changes in your mouth while saying this word. The number of changes plus one will be equal to the number of phonemes. This rule can be a really easy and interesting activity for children.

Use Phoneme Counting Cards

Another interesting phoneme counting method is to use cards. There are several free phoneme counting cards present on the internet. You can print them in a bundle and distribute it to each child. Children will count the number of sounds and write it under the boxes present under each letter. Then the children will count the number of phonemes by counting the number of sounds.
