Covid-19 Vaccine: Does Drinking Water Before Shot Help | HealthShots

This is probably the only time when most of us are thrilled about getting a vaccine. After all, Covid-19 has shaken us to the core, and any solution that can even remotely protect us is a blessing. But well, we’ve all experienced a few temporary side-effects after getting vaxxed. Fever and fatigue have been the most common, and we’ve had to lie like logs post the shot (yes, to recover). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people to stay well-hydrated after getting the vaccine, especially if they catch fever post the shot. But there are certain claims that drinking water before getting a shot helps too.
There’s not much evidence to prove its legitimacy, but let’s just say staying well-hydrated hurt no one.

To understand if this is truly a tip to be followed, HealthShots got in touch with two experts to tell us more about this.
Should you drink water before a Covid-19 shot?
YES, says Dr Seema Dhir, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram. But why? She has an answer, “Drinking more water will reduce the chances of coagulation disturbances, which have been reported with Covid-19 vaccines. Well-hydrated bodies can probably protect themselves from coagulation disorders. Another thing is that Covid vaccines can cause fever, and a dehydrated body is likely to feel the impact much more. So, it is best to have lots of water.”
Another expert — Dr Ann Mary, Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases Amrita Hospital, says, “There are various non-medical measures that are recommended before taking the Covid-19 vaccination like drinking water before getting vaccinated. This is to ensure that the person is well-hydrated and less likely to have episodes of fainting or syncope during the immediate period post vaccination.”
Fainting or pre-syncope after vaccination can occur due to pain related to vaccination, resulting in a transient increase in vagal tone (activity of the vagus nerve). This would result in light-headedness, sweating and sometimes fainting episodes.
“This would necessitate lying on one’s back with legs raised, and sometimes would need further measures like intravenous fluid administration and other medications. Being adequately hydrated before vaccination ensures less incidence of such events,” says Dr Mary.

Here are some tips recommended by UNICEF to follow before you get your shot
1. Do your research
Since there’s a lot of misinformation being spread online, try and read information on trustworthy sources. If you have any questions or concerns about the vaccine, you could also ask your doctor. You may be asked to refrain from getting the vaccine, if you are severely allergic to any ingredients present in the vaccine. You will also be advised not to take the vaccine, if you are currently sick or experiencing symptoms of Covid-19.
2. Get a good night’s rest
Adequate sleep of 8-9 hours is important the night before the vaccine.
3. Drink as many healthy fluids
Drink healthy fluids so that you feel best on the day.
