The daily count of new COVID cases in WA has dipped by dozens and there have been no new deaths but the number of active cases has again surpassed 30,000.

WA Health reported 4312 new cases on Monday, down from 4390 the day prior.

As of 6pm on Sunday, 226 people were in hospital with the virus, with those in intensive care remaining nine.

It is the second straight day no new deaths have been recorded.

There are currently 30,267 active cases in WA, up from 29,942 on Sunday.

More than 25,000 are in the metropolitan area, while the region with the most infections is the South West, with 1636 cases.

Last week’s peak in new cases was 5921, reported on Wednesday.

More than 3070 of the 4312 new cases were detected by rapid antigen tests.

Acting Premier and former health minister Roger Cook said on Monday he did not “necessarily see a need to introduce any sort of mask measures” despite growing fears of a third COVID wave, fuelled by new Omicron sub-variants, that appear to be gathering momentum across Australia.

Mr Cook also welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to scrap COVID vaccination requirements for international visitors to Australia from Wednesday, saying it would remove ‘another barrier” for tourists and skilled workers.

He insisted the State’s hospitals could cope with a potential increase in unvaccinated foreigners falling ill with the virus.
