Making a tortilla bowl is super easy - no tortilla bowl maker necessary... Choose between sweet cinnamon-sugar tortilla bowls for desserts or savory taco salad bowls!

Let me just be clear from the start - the tortillas themselves are not homemade. I've actually never made my own tortillas, but if you're looking for an authentic homemade tortillas recipe, look no further than my lovely friend Lori.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, if you're looking for an easy way to make crispy and delicious tortilla bowls (sweet or savory), you've come to the right place!

Making homemade tortilla bowls is incredibly easy, and they're a versatile and fun way to serve a variety of foods. Plain tortilla bowls are perfect for taco salad bowls or burrito bowls (try this yummy beef barbacoa recipe!).

Sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, they're a delicious after-school snack, when filled with yogurt or fresh fruit, or as a dessert with pudding or ice cream. My kids are crazy for them both ways!

How To Make Tortilla Bowls

To make basic homemade tortilla bowls, all you need is a package of 6-inch flour tortillas and some melted butter. I prefer salted butter, but unsalted will work just fine, too.

Start by brushing both sides of each tortilla lightly with the melted butter. Lightly is the key word here - don't saturate the tortilla, because the bottom of the "bowl" will be soggy and disappointing.

There are two ways you can form the bowls. I started by draping the buttered tortillas over some small Pyrex bowls set on a cookie sheet. After baking for three minutes, the tortillas should be pliable, and you can flip the bowls over and press the tortillas down into the bowls so they fold up and form a cup shape.

Alternatively, you can use the same method with a jumbo muffin tin. After forming the bowls, place them back into the oven to bake for another 10-12 minutes.

Cinnamon-Sugar Dessert Bowls

If you want to make the sweet cinnamon-sugar tortilla dessert bowls, you simply need to sprinkle both sides of each tortilla with cinnamon and sugar after brushing them with with the melted butter. Then form and bake as I mentioned before, until the tortillas are crisp and golden at the edges.

At this point you just need to resist the temptation to eat them all before filling them with something yummy. Hands off for now, please!

Let the tortilla bowls cool on a wire rack completely before serving. You can make them up to a day ahead - just store them in an airtight container!

  • 6 flour tortillas - 6-inch size
  • 2 tablespoon salted butter - melted
  • 2 tablespoon granulated sugar - optional
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon - optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Lightly brush both sides of each tortilla with the melted butter. If you're making the sweet tortilla bowls, mix together the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. Sprinkle the mixture on both sides over the melted butter.
  3. Lay the tortillas over small oven-safe bowls turned upside down or over a jumbo muffin tin. Bake for about 3 minutes, until the tortillas are soft and pliable.
  4. Remove the tortillas from the oven, and immediately turn the bowls or muffin tin over. Working quickly, press each tortilla down into a bowl or muffin cup, folding it and forming it into a cup shape.
  5. Place the tortilla bowls back into the oven, and bake for 10-12 minutes, until the tortillas are crispy and browning around the edges. Remove the tortilla bowls immediately and place on a wire cooling rack to cool completely, about 15 minutes.
