Just like Crispy Butternut Squash Fries, Spicy Sweet Potato Fries, Air Fryer Zucchini Chips, and Air Fryer Fries, these turnip chips are delicious vehicles to make veggies exciting.

What Do Turnips Taste Like?

If a carrot, a potato, and a radish had a really wild night and produced a tasty root vegetable offspring, it would be a turnip. They’re a little bit bland, with a tiny bit of spice (like a radish), and roasting brings out the natural sweetness that is masked if eaten raw.

When buying, you’ll want to choose smaller turnips over larger ones. Larger turnips tend to be a bit tougher and less sweet than their smaller counterparts.

Sprinkle finished fries with kosher salt and if you’re smart and love yourself, dip them in Chipotle Sauce or Sweet Potato Fries Dipping Sauce. For a zesty and dairy-free sauce, try Cilantro Chimichurri.

If you’re in the mood for something a little spicy, combine the awesomeness of Buffalo Chicken Fries but use these turnip chips as the base.

This recipe calls for fresh rosemary. If you have leftovers, check out my tutorial on How to Dry Rosemary.

Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

  • To make homemade veggie fries crispier, a nice powdery coating of cornstarch or arrowroot powder works wonders. You can also sub in potato starch if needed.
  • Do your best to cut the turnips into uniform sizes. This will result in even roasting. The smaller the fries, the faster they’ll cook.
  • If your turnip fries aren’t crisping up, chances are your baking sheet is too crowded. Transfer half the fries to another baking sheet and pop back in the oven for about 5 minutes.

  1. I’m probably overlooking it – but what is the sauce in the pic?

    1. You’re not overlooking it; it’s not part of the recipe so I don’t mention it in the post. It’s just for the photos. 🙂

It’s plain greek yogurt mixed with sriracha.

  2. Is there a substitute for arrowroot powder?

    1. If you don’t have any food sensitivities, you can use cornstarch or potato starch.

  3. I made these last night and they’re absolutely unreal – so healthy, crispy and delicious! I didn’t have arrowroot so I used potato starch and it worked perfectly. 5 stars

    1. Potato starch is such an incredible swap. I love it for homemade potato fries, and I’m glad it could help you make this recipe work out.

  4. Yum! This is way better than a different turnip fry recipe I recently tried. The smoked paprika takes it up a notch. Thank you!5 stars

    1. Yay, so happy to hear you liked it Elizabeth! I’m obsessed with smoked paprika and would put it on basically everything savory if my family wouldn’t protest.

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review.

  5. We recently signed up for a Farm Share box with no opt out of any produce, and so we’ve been scrambling to find recipes for veggies we would never buy.

I always thought I hated turnips, but it turns out I was wrong. Or at least I don’t hate turnips fries. Actually, I love them.  Fight over the leftovers love them. They are great naked, supposedly they are great with ketchup (per my husband), and they are even better with chimichurri (Farm Box also had a ton of herbs).

I’m now anxiously awaiting our next delivery of turnips so we can have more fries. 5 stars

    1. Farm shares are so fun for this very reason! I’m so happy you found a use for the turnips! Thanks so much for taking the time to post a review. 🙂

  6. Can the turnip fries be done in an air fryer?

    Reply
    1. I haven’t tried it. Yet.

I found them a bit more delicate than other veggie fries so I’m not sure how they would do in an air fryer basket.
