The only official currency in Cuba since January 1, 2021 is the CUP (Cuban Pesos).

It is important to mention that the exchange of U.S. dollars to Cuban pesos is NO longer subject to a 10% tax; as it was a measure repealed in July 2020.

Until the end of 2020, Cuba had a double economy, the official currencies in Cuba since then being the Cuban pesos (CUP) and the Cuban convertible pesos (CUC).

The value of the Cuban convertible peso (CUC) was US $ 1.00.

Finally, after the elimination of the CUC, a value of 24 CUP was established for each CUC.

Are credit cards accepted in Cuba?

Despite Cuban economy relying mainly on cash, credit and debit cards are accepted and can be used in resorts and ATM. The most usual ones are Visa and Mastercard.

Travel Money issued by Visa are accepted, although they are highly cumbersome. Note that you have to pay a commision both when buying and selling them, and not all banks and hotel accept them.
