Current Hurricanes In Mexico

Current aerial photo of Mexico on Saturday, 10:00 am CSTHurricanes in Mexico On average, Mexico is hit by hurricanes 24 times a year. Sometimes, they do not make landfall in Mexico, but turn off to the north beforehand. Then only the foothills cause squalls and heavy rainfall. The most affected regions are the Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea and the southern coastal area on the Pacific west coast.

The official hurricane season in the Pacific lasts from mid-May to the end of November. In the Atlantic, it begins just two weeks later and also ends in November.

Tropical storms from Pacific and Atlantic

Tropical storms form over warm ocean waters. Mexico is doubly affected by this, as the west coast lies on the Pacific and the east coast on the Atlantic. The warmer the ocean water gets in the summer months, the more heat rises in the upper air masses. In combination with the earth's rotation, this results in the air vortices that can become full-blown hurricanes at the latitudes of Mexico. In the southern half of Mexico, the water in both oceans is warm enough for tropical depressions to regularly develop into hurricanes. In the northern parts of the country, water temperatures are only rarely sufficient to reach higher categories.

A hurricane is defined as a wind speed of 119 kilometers per hour or more, although the actual storm system only moves at a few kilometers per hour. Normally, a tropical storm only picks up speed slowly. The time it normally takes for a tropical depression to reach the destructive force of a dangerous hurricane is usually several days. In October 2023, "Otis" only needed 12 hours. Globally, this is happening more and more frequently. Climate change is also increasingly heating up bodies of water, making more energy available to evaporate water and thus set large air masses in rotation. On the one hand, additional heat energy causes cyclones to occur more frequently, but on the other hand it also makes them stronger and faster. Nevertheless, "Otis" is considered an exception for such rapid development.
