The large Curse-rotted Greatwood is one of the many Bosses you will face in Dark Souls 3.

The boss is located near the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, in the Undead Settlement area. Greatwood is an optional boss, and does not need to be killed to progress the game.

Weaknesses

Due to the unique nature of the fight, this boss is not weak to, or resistant against any one type of attack.

Battle Strategy

This boss has a very special condition present throughout the fight, so no matter what type of character you are, we suggest following the same, similar strategy.

Starting out, you will have time to clear out the many human enemies in the area. Try to kill all, or as many as you can before the tree comes alive. Once it has, if there are any left, deal with them first before getting to the tree.

The boss has several attacks, but only a couple worth making a note of.

• Slam - The boss will lift straight up, then try to come slamming down onto you. Anytime you see the boss leave the ground, immediately begin running away.
• Toxic Pools - The boss will spin, throwing toxic pools all around. These will slow and damage you, so avoid as best as possible.
• Hand Attacks - During phase two, the tree grows a hand. It will use this in two primary ways. To punch and grab you anytime you're in front of it, and to setup a forward slam attack where it lifts off the ground then tries crushing you. Like it's normal Slam, anytime you see it leave the ground run away immediately.

Now to deal with the Greatwood. This fight is unique, in that you can't hurt the tree normally. Hitting the bark anywhere will result in no damage being done, and your weapon/spells bouncing off. In order to damage the boss, you must hit the white sacks that appear around his body. There is a large mass in front, on his back, and on each leg. Hit them several times to cause them to burst, stunning the boss and dealing massive amounts of damage.

Phase Two

After lowering the bosses health by about 25%, he will stomp the ground, cracking it, then causing the entire floor to cave in. Don't worry, as you fall, you take no damage. Once the tree lands, a large white hand will burst from its chest as well, giving it new attacks.

This boss can only be damaged in very specific spots, which makes hitting it with magic very tough. If you're a mage, bring a long reaching weapon to this fight. It doesn't need to be strong, as the damage isn't important, you just need to be able to hit the pods until they explode, and then they deal damage to the boss.

Phase two will largely be like phase one. Run around hitting the sacks, while avoiding attacks. The front of the tree will not be safe anymore due to the hand, which will try to grab you anytime you linger for too long near it. For this reason, the only safe time to be in front of the boss is while it's stunned, or right after a combo. Anytime a pod explodes, it will stun the boss, so with quick feet, you can run from one pod to another, chain stunning the boss until it dies.

In the event you are unable to target any pods, the hand can also be damaged, however this should only be used as a last ditch effort, as attacking the hand puts you at risk of being grabbed, which does a serious amount of damage.
